Hueso,
Most of your info is correct, the first one is right on, the second uses Hurth 630A 1:5:1 gear 20x23 depending on the load. The third is a waste not enough power for a good cruise. The Styer's can use Hurth 630 A 1:5:1 can go down to 1-1/4" shafts, basically the same running gear as a big block gasser. The Volvos cost to much to maintain, forget a bout them.
The 260 Cummings I don't know anything about them. The 270 Cummins are a good engine for a 31, the 300 Cummins common rail are even better if you can still get them. If I had my choice I would go with the 300 Cummins for a Fly bridge or Sport fish model. The most common motors I see out there when doing my 31 Bertram surveys are the 300 Cummins in the Northeast area, down in Florida I see more Yanmars 315's.

Why would you bring up cummins cpl 970 for a new installation? Rather silly comparing 1982 technology with present day . at least use cummins storm block era cummins 315 hp 2004 or newer. Two cummins 315 (330) hp is the eqivalent of 3 yanmar 315 hp in torque even more with QSB 330 hp.incidently the biggest northeast yanmar dealer mack boring just "thru in the towel" no rebuilding yanmar engines they or repair they just sell parts .

Huesso

The 270 Cummins, you can run 20x23 4 blade or go up to a 21 ince blade. I am running 20X23. 11/2 shaft. You can use pretty much the same balde on the 250 that you do on the 270. You have 1/3/8 for hte 250. Not sue but I think you would need to go to 1 1/2.

Tony, the 250s with 1+3/8 were on my Seachele31. Ran her for a few years w no problem. I was told that was the limit so got new aqua22 shafts no need for strut changes. Worked good.

Couple guys in my harbor run Perkins in their 31's with good results. One older was a smoker and another fairly new install. I recall nothing on the specs, cruise, shafts...nada. Nothing more to add but curious if anybody can fill in the blanks.

I had my struts bored out and used a thin wall bearing. I am running 1 1/2 aua shafts. I got lucky, we got them from a guy who was doing a rebuild and quit. They were brand new and he gave me a great price. We had to have them slightly cut down.

Hueso, I have your # 1 setup, Yanmars with 20x23 4 blade props. There are 1700 hours on the engines, just finished the past month with 4 trips to the canyons off NJ. We average 132 gal per 30 or 36 hour trip.

Question: My engines are specified as 6BT 5.9 250hp, not 6BTA.
Do I really have 210hp or 250?
There is no aftercooler

Ed it is not a good subject i have better car accidents! Yelling ,screaming, distrust, making enemy from long time friends, and just plain telling people your boating season is over but oakdale yacth will do its best to track down the parts.sooner or later you become a rat!! and avoid the customer ,look at the calling number on the phone and don't pick up. " look you son of a bitch my friend got a turbo for his ancient 3116 for two grand why is the yanmar 6 grand ,or i don't mind paying DOUBLE but triple pisses me off. Why do suppose the biggest in the north threw in the towel? We avoid like the plague.
