We've been doing a little shooting. Today was rough. It blew 40 all day with gusts to 53. There's a load of drift with a 55 grain bullet at 300 yards……

Bruce, it's a 12" twist so I'm staying light. As I'm just getting to know the gun, I'm trying a lot of different stuff (all factory).

So far, the gun seems to like Federal V-Shok 55 grain BTHP and Fiocchi 55 grain PSP.

It doesn't do particularly well with military 55 grain FMJ stuff. It's sort of like throwing a screwball out there. To be fair, I'm not sure that the barrel is quite 'shot in' yet, so that might change.

I haven't tried any lighter bullets yet, but I have some 53's and 45's to fool with when the wind dies down.

I thought maybe you were using the 22-250 but when you said military stuff I take it its 5.56 since your not rolling your own using military surplus bullets.

Didn't drive this time.

Made two shots at exactly 400 yards and one at 424 yards with 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip .223 Federal Premium ammo.

Still trying to get my 500 yard patch, but the heat distortion is so bad that you can't even see 'em that far away.

Great video Mean Mike, and the music from the water ballet scene in Caddy Shack was perfect! Never felt like I needed an excuse for missing any shot over 200 yards, but heat distortion is as good as any! :-)

The 40x's are nice match guns.

I was wondering if you were using a variable power. I first used a fixed 36x when I started shooting at 1000yds and depending on the terrain, convection currents, heat, wind I ran into issues with mirages.
I changed to a 6.5x24 and reduced some of those problems by backing off the power. Harder to see your target though but not nearly as hard as seeing a brown dog on brown dirt a couple inches from ground level.

Nice shooting.

Have you tried Blacks Hills rounds yet? They have a 36 Gr. Varmint Grenade in .223, velocity is 3750 FPS, energy is 1124 Ft. Lbs.

I've been shooting mostly Black Hills 52 grain match hollow points, which are the only Black Hills ammo that I can find.

Yesterday there was a relatively light wind, and by the end of the day, 375 to 400 yard shots were fairly automatic. If there was any place near my house where I could shoot 1000 yards, I would consider looking for a gun that could do it, and trying my luck. Even out here, the longest range I've seen is 600 yards.

There is one in Albany county NY. The Forbes club has a 1000 yard range with positions at 200, 300, 600, 800, 900 & 1000 yards.

Not sure how far it is from you.

There are a few bench rest clubs around NY but bench rest clubs tend to be old geezer attitude types or dudes who sunk 10 grand into a rifle you can't even pickup with a fork lift. Where's the sport in that?

See if you can find some Corbon. Its loaded a little hotter than most but good stuff. I use their 400 grn FP in .458 SOCOM.
