To all the faithful the best wishes for the New Year. I have been down in Jaco Beach costa rica for the last 9 days and ran into some interesting stories.
Johnny Rogers from St Pete (now living in jaco beach) ran a 32 ft topaz out of st pete with 300 yannys (GETAWAY CHARTERS)that he had installed by Mastry,1999 2000,,and had absolutely nothing good to say about them ,,2 teardowns on the heads valves ,etc.less than 1000 hours,. candy ¨coral in the heAT EXCHANGERS ,wow was he bitter i MEAN HE WAS REAL BITTER I told him I have 1400 hrs in 5 seasons and only raw water pumps to deal with ,.,fluids and such are routine I told him of our web page and the number of guys who have done the 300.s repower and not so much as a peep from anybody about problems .,.,wow was he adamant, saying mastry wouldnt honor the warranty 2 TEARDOWNS IN THE FIRST YEAR AFTER DROPPING 52 DIMES. That is the first bad thing I have heard about yannys since i bought them. He went on to suggest that the 315s were a better block, I was under the impression that the 315 block was the same block as the 300,,,i FELT BAD FOR THE GUY must have been the 1 Lemon in the production because the year and time frame he did his was when i did mine.
Havent been out fishing yet ,,it was suggested i wait till the 10th and 11th 12th as it will be a new moon then and odds will be on our side ,,,,
U.V. the panama trip you are running is looking better and better all the time charters down here are hefty at 650 half day and 1k to 1500 full day
I found a 30 ft express owned by a guy from argentina now relocated to jaco beach ,, He also knew of the webpage etc so i will be fishing with him
on the New Moon ,,,I anm here till feb 1st when i return to ft Lauderdale to finish out the winter fun,,,,I see U.V. has the fundraiser in full swing and <I will be making my contribution when i get out of the 3rd world
Doc keep those sails in KEY lARGO AT THE READY i´LL BE DOWN!
andre,,,,HAVENT SEEN ANY SAILS ,WHALES, and no lizzards walking upright on 2 back legs but i seen toucans, and howler monkeys in the rain forest,.,.,.,.,I hope Johnny Rogers hasnt put the ¨Malooky¨on me.,.,.,
The summer fun up north is in countdown mode till I launch again

Ric,
The 300 and 315 are the same engine. They just rated them under a different system.
Original engines did have a oil seal and valve carbon problem which did lead to dropped valves, but it was attributed to under turning rpm. That is why they want them turning 3950 now.

Say what you will about Mastry on certain things, but never had them turn down a legit warratee claim and infact has cover things out of the warrantee period for me.

I was involved with a local manufacturer of inboard center consoles to rig 20 boats with Cummins engines for a resort in Costa Rico.
After doing my CYA research, I found out this company had been in a lawsuit involving the same setup with Yanmars where they had massive engine failure.

After all was said and done it turns out the stuffing box area was a low point and accumulated water and when it got high enough, the shaft and coupling picked it up and threw it up the backside right into the turbo inlet.

It was suggested to put a bilge pump in that area to eliminate the problem, but they didn't do it and the current setup if I had installed the Cummins would have done the same thing to them.
And I would have had to close the doors when the lawsuits started flying from that disaster, so I declined to do the work.

On the surface, the engines took the blame. I had to dig to find the water problem knowing that that many engines just do not fail without an outside cause.

My experience with owners like Johnny is that the trouble is split, 20% machinery, 80% owners attitude.
Out of all the stuff I have owned over the years, crap happens and stuff fails. Never had a problem getting something repaired unless I abused the crap out of it.

Bruce you be right again, because as I was talking and probing him we started talking about R.P.M. and I told him what i was running at 3950 to 4k and >I asked him what his rpms were and the first word out of his mouth was 3600,,,,he said they fooled with the props pitch and cup they were low then they were high etc I just couldnt understand why if Mastry did the install and the sea trial ,,they didnt pick up on the r.pm. ,ie; not getting what they were suppose to be getting so tweak till the r.pm. is where it was suppose to be ,,apparently that was not done in a timely manner and its failure was probably attributed to that overloading,,,,
I to believe Mastry has a credible reputation just by the volume of 31s he has been affiliated with.,.,.,and you be right about owner/ customer attitude too, seems to me Johnny Rogers had a serious attitude ,.,.,.his attitude was brought on by the $$$$$$$ he said he lost as a result of the down time he spent while his schedule was booked up,,,,,,,,hey Sheeet happens,,well its just annother day in paradise down here,,,,,,Pura vida
