Sandy claws left me a mess

hello all,
I have not been on this site for a long, long, time and was saddened when I saw the thread to Vicroy.
I have conversed with the man a few times and know he is a great person. I can only hope there is more to life then what we see and some where we get what we deserve.

I hope everyone did OK with Sandy [as good as can be expected].
I own a few rentals and so had 4 houses and one packed garage flooded with approx 24" of oily water, a car hit a house and tree fell and took off part of a roof of another.
But with the help of my kids and my brother I recovered [I can almost cry when I think how they all stepped up to help me, non stop for over a month.
Now here is the interesting part. a 38' chriscraft [junk] and a 53' aft cabin ocean [nice] washed up on lawn.
These boats were tied side by side during the storm [and 5 years before], they were coming towards my house until th y got stuick on a flag pole that I made [now lost].
The owner was trying to retrieve them and promised to repair my property.
5 months later he does not return my calls.
I am in touch with the town, they are trying to remove them if they can.
If not I guess I have to rent an excavator and dismantel them myself. I am just afraid of getting oil in the water, obtaining ownership, etc.
Any suggestions.
I have some good pics but don't know how to load them.

Call Towboat US. If the boats have insurance they will get paid salvage

You can also get title to them. You have to prove that they are abandon or you are owed money. You would have to deal with DMV on that one. The Marinas do it all the time when they are owed Money.

Maybe if John is still lurking he can comment.

I suppose it is possible the owner has already received payment from his insurance company and doesn't want anything more to do with the boats.. or you for that matter. Who would simp-ly walk away from a good boat normally?

Good morning,
it looks like he did not have insurance.
The ocean is now partially sunk [one engine may be under].
It just keeps getting worse, as the owner stalls and now disappeared.
If anyone can explain how to post pics I will share them.

Around here boats floated all over the place. The guys I know who collected them were able to make a salvage claim. I would call one of the tow boat services and see if they can help. If the boats have an insurer it is usually worthwhile for the person claiming salvage.

I had read some where that the insurance company's and the local law enforcemet were not letting just anyone try and salvage those boats until the owners could be found. Did your friends run the salvage through the insurance companies.

Tony, I sent you an email after storm guess you never got it. I know very little about salvage but it seems to me like it's finder's keepers.

Well I hope you managed to 'find' that nice little Whaler off of the back of the Ocean.......

Check out Wikipedia "Law of Salvage." Best as I can tell the industry/insurers recognize boats on land that float away in a flood as subject to salvage.

I just claimed the whaler [its not that great but at least it floats].
I am looking into the laws now.
Now I wish I did this sooner but with multiple flooded houses I could only handle so much at one time.

For some reason never received it. Glad to see you made out ok. One more tide cycle and I think I would have had an issue. Boat needed about three more feet of water to float off the cradle and then it would have been water in the crawl space. Close but no CIGAR. I figure it had to be tough back were you live.

Glad you are ok. My town got hammered but we were lucky no damage no water. Boat rode it out unscratched. Thanks for asking.
