I am about ready to paint the hull and install Alex's rub rail. Would you guys chime in with your preference, dark blue, or fighting lady yellow. Interior is grey formica with grey cushions. Appreciate any opinions......

Dark colors require a very, very fair hull. Even the slightest imperfections will stand out like a turd in a punch bowl.... Light colors on the other hand will do much to down play those same imperfections. In addition, dark colors absorb radiant heat where as light colors reflect it. Heat can be quite detrimental to underlaying fiberglass structures and even a perfectly faired hull can become flawed in a few seasons...

I reelly like the Light Gray Gert did the first go round with Matterhorn White.
That color is rEEl high on my list.

Carl, Gert's grey was my choice, but family got the veto. The choice is between dark blue and yellow. Mikey, love that boat!

Well then, dark blue or yellow it is and it will look magnificent!

That family vote gets ya every-time...missed several of rendezvous's because of that vote.

I have a blue hull and it's a lot of care to keep it looking good. It always needs to be freshwater sprayed after running cause when dry all the salt crystals appear. Also, if you get any nicks or scratches they show. Blue looks great but requires maintenance.

I like blue.

Rolled and tipped Alwgrip. Empress blue I believe, The boat was carolina blue and changed it in 1999. The photo is last year when I repainted it.

I loved that Grey Gert used also. Really looked sharp.

I just never pictured a Bert other than white, but remember, hull #1 was orange, don't know why they picked Orange but they did for the roll out of the boat. Maybe it was to attract attentiion.

Bob, like your choice. As I said earlier, grey was my choice, but family vetoed.. I've assembled pix of the popular colors, and the decision will be made this weekend. We've been a boating family for years, so all are involved. Paint and rubrail in early April. Waiting for consistent warm weather. Thanks to all who voiced an opinion.

I'm a big fan of off colors. Whisper Grey, fighting lady yellow, aqua mist etc. basically anything light enough to not be over powering but still capable of supporting a white boot or yacht stripe. As far as actual choice it's up to you but you should certainly look had at Mr Higgins post and pick up on the correct way to make a rub rail disappear

Pretty work Bob can't wait to see the top sides. Gonna be working for my bro the next 2 weeks in the Bahamas. Timing couldn't be better to get away from this weather just hoping the plane take off.

There are two colors for a boat. White and wrong.

My Bertram is fighting lady yellow. ;)

I would guess he did not paint that rubrail, not when its brand new...

The rail was first cleaned with wax & grease remover after installation, then scuffed with 220, awlprep wipe prior to priming with 545 awlgrip epoxy primer, second scuff with 320, second coat of primer, then red scotchbrite 400 to take shine off 2nd coat of primer,tape off, paint lower half of rail the hull color and top half the cabin/topside color, should give more color topside between the teak cap and rubrail. Love that shot of Dreamsicle..and the reflection back off the water..BH

I would say take a light colour , you have to do less cleaning !! and the darker the colour the more fairing you have to do..

Still looking good. How many years is it since you painted her? Holding up well in that Florida Sun.

Noted early on that someone said they clear coated over the name on the stern. My painter says "no" to me as mine is vinyl. The two items (paint and vinyl) expand and shrink at different rates so he say its a no-no.
Again early on there was a comment on never waxing Awl Grip or Awl Craft. Love an explanation.

Awlgrip -- No wax... The Awlgrip is formulated to develop it's own "clear coat" through the curing process. The migrated surface layer is microscopically thin but very hard. As long as that migratory layer remains intact the paint will retain a "wet" look and waxing only dulls the finish.

Awl Craft on the other hand was produced to compete with maintainable paints like Imron and since it's a maintainable paint it needs to be sealed and polished after the second year. Same with Imron...

Back to Awlgrip, after that microscopic finish fails, (about 5 years down south and around 8 up north), a luster can be polished in, but it'll never have the same wet look.

I think that was in Cranstons clear coat thread Mikey... but either way-
the vinyl decals would also be damaged during clear application by the solvents in the catalyzed & reduced polyurethane.

The waxing- I'm not sure, seems to be two schools on that. I've heard guys say do, and guys say absolutely not. I know it'd be a real bad idea before a full cure of the urethane though...

....Which is why I should name my boat," learning the hard way." I am to the point that bleach may be an option to make the paint look better. Oh well.

Our boat is fl yellow...everyone hates the color...we're changeing to aqua mist whenever the fog lets up. I'm blind as a bat, and it really shouldn't matter,but, it does...the wife hated the yellow from the get go...she's crazy about the white, but, with white boot stripe, bottom and canvas...aqua mist or ice blue.

Many thanks, guys. One more. We have been through this before but since I am repainting now let's do it again. I presently have Awl Craft, about nine-years old. The theory on Craft being the repairability. Well the paint failed as far as color fast but is still hard as a rock. Since we are repainting the same color let's hear the argument for either Awl Craft or Awl Grip. Why does the manufacturer produce two paints?

Pat covered that one above Mikey... The Awlcraft (acrylic urethane) was developed to compete with the other repairable/maintainable products with similar technology.
Boat owners love Awlgrip.
Boat painters love Awlcraft.
The fading in your orange is because the pigments needed to make your color (red & yellow) are organic pigments, and therefore subject to relativley rapid ultraviolet degradation. The integrity of the cured film will still be intact, but the pigmentation will faaaaaaaade away...

A few coats of clear over your hullsides may retard the UV fade... In theory it will, in reality?

Thanks, that's what I needed. We're clear coating so I will cross my fingers. Still think my Bride is correct. If it lasts another seven to ten years I will probably be at an age where I won't give a s#*t.
Now, just need to get my butt on her and enjoy!

I used AWLCARE on my transom. Now the diesel soot collects like crazy where I applied it. And srubbing it off now is a pain. Paint was one year old before application. Prior to that everything wiped up so easy. Does it get easier as the season wears on?
