It's leaking

The raw water cooling pump, Jabsco, is leaking. The application is for Merc Marine
GM 427. The question is: can it be rebuilt and if so,
is there a shop in New York or close by?

These things happen in the industry.

Usually the mechanical seal goes on the raw water pumps causing them to leak.

Once your into it for that you might as well change Cam, bearing, and check shaft and end plates for wear. Kits or Parts A La Carte" for most units are available for much less then a new pump. Local marine shop should be able to tackle it for you.

Depco pump for kits or the whole pump. Nice people and reasonable.

O.K. Just sent an e.mail to DEPCO. Let's see what happens.
I wonder if I can rebuild it myself. I am the remove and replace kinda person .... you know,
mechanically challenged.
So far things have been good.

I called Depco when I needed a bearing for the water pump on my Mase generator.. they were great to deal with. I recommend them highly!

DEPCO got right back. They have a kit that includes an impeller, face gasket and water seal. But my pump makes a clicking sound not in a rhythm but every second or so. My impeller, cam and gasket are new this spring. Could it be the bearings?
I spoke to DEPCO and I think I will send them the pump ... their turnaround time is a day.

Not much else it could be...bearing is a quick change and this would be the time to do it.

Could be a DIY project provided you had the right tools...an arbor press with right size spacers and bushings is a big plus.
But for a few bucks I'd let someone else do it. Old pumps can be a pain to take apart.

Sim, you can say that again. I just rebuilt a Sherwood E-35 that must have been leaking for a while. Inner part ofl bearing race was rusted to the shaft, outer to the housing. Machine shop had to mill it out. Rusted ball bearings just fell out. Funny thing is the engine temperature never changed.

If you are taking it apart yourself try soaking it in Evaporust first to loosen it up. Also I suggest heating it with a torch. You can spring them or crack them with a press if you aren't careful.

I changed to bronze fronts on my pumps because of the corrosion problem. More expensive, but last longer.

That is where having the right size sleeves/bushings come into play...you support right around bearings OD.
