That is so impressive, it almost borders on rediculous. Best description I ever heard as to how hard a Permit fights -- "tie it to the tail of a tuna and it will drag the tuna backwards until it drowns."

Brewster,
Nice catch, where were you fishing, Florida Keys, Belize or the Bahamas? I never used a fly rod but have caught the inshore slam (Tarpon, Permit Bonefish) At Turniffe Island off the coast of Belize 1994 with an ultra light reel and 6 pound test. Best Bonefishing I ever encountered 17 off 19 Bone's in 3 hours of sight casting inside the reef, all the fish were in the 4 to 8 pound range. I was only on the island for 2 days due to stomach illness, I never got back to the island still have a 4 day credit. Again nice fish.

We were at the Grandslam Flyfishing Resort in Punta Allen, Mexico. Having been to many fishing lodges around the world I would rank this as one of the best. Great fishing, first class food and drink and the whole crew there really went out of their way to make the trip perfect. If you like to flyfish in saltwater, it is as good as it gets.

Again congratulations Brew! On a 5 wt even more impressive. A bit tough casting a crab fly on a 5 wt? Was wondering what you were doing with the other boats on the hard. Now I know.

Walter, the rod casts the crab fly well. The guide said in 20 years he has never seen a permit that size caught on a 5 wt. Another comment was made later(by another guest) that nobody was stupid enough to try. "Stupid is as stupid does" is what I said after several clears.

Good going Brew. How did you cook him? They look like my favorite fish, the pompano. Thin sliced filets dusted in a little flour then browned in butter with a touch of garlic?

Beautiful Permit.

My Dad used to clean up on the Pompano at the Sebastian Inlet. He said to roll them in flour and deep fry them and they taste just like Iguana.

Sand Fleas in the surf.

Very Nice!

My only permitt on the fly was an accident while bonefishing in Bermuda. It was a hugh 10 in. Never even saw it. It stole the fly from a bone.

Is that isla blanca behind you?
