23 Sea Craft

A buddy of mine just bought a 1980 23 sea craft that he's gonna rebuild. It has a blown 1996 200hp Yamaha and no trailer. It's good enough to use with a running motor.

If anyone knows of a good deal on a used outboard please pass it along, preference is a 200-225 Yamaha 4s. Something cheap that gives him a few seasons could work too.

Also looking for a trailer, preferably a dual axle float on.

Of course what he prefers and the right deal leaves some wiggle room so if anyone knows or has something that will work please pass it along.

Thanks. Pete

Pete:

I don't know what he defines as "cheap" but this place sells rebuilds with a 1 year warranty. Price is 40% of new.

They are in Waterford, CT - which is a short tow away from where the ferry arrives in New London!

Be careful with the weight on the back of that Sea Craft.

Not allot of height difference between the decks and the ocean.

Extra battery, extra pumps

Thanks JP. This boat has a transom splash well but scuppers go down to bilge, likely the first thing to address.

He's going to have to figure out what the right weight is, I think the hull was rated up to 500hp but weight will be very important. The current 200 seems to be right, guessing the 4s version is heavier.

I'll leave that to him and it seems he's got a pretty good forum on classicseacraft to bounce ideas off of.

Thanks rob but it's a 25"

Tomorrow I have to use the bertam to tow that boat from Islip to Babylon. If I have time I was hoping to stop in and say hello.

Pete P,
Pay attention to the weight of the engine that your going to repower with. A four stroke 225 Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda all weigh around 580 pounds give or take 8 pounds. A 225 Merc Verado weighs 635, compared to a 225 Evinrude at 503 pounds. All weights are for 25" shaft motors. Check for transom rot and stress cracking at transom quarters, like JP said there isn't much free board at the transom. The older 225's were a lot lighter they averaged around 400 pounds back when the boat was built.
Good luck with the repower, the 23 Sea Craft was a nice riding little boat.

That must be one of the last Potter built Seacrafts -- I have a friend that has a cherry 23 (1976) that rides like a dream. I've tried to buy it several times, he won't part with it. The non Potter boats are not that desirable and suffer from serious woodrot both in transom and stringers.

A potter hull was part of his master plan. Would have liked to find an inboard hull but when the right deal comes along minutes from home it's hard to pass up.

On the motors it's already got yami gauges and rigging so a 4s or HDPI are his first choice to make things easy.

Here is Chris, sure he's lurking and appreciates the help. Best day of his life, today that is, just bought a classic potter hull. Funny enough bought it from the brother of the guy I bought my 31 from. Shows up to take a look and wouldn't you know it same slip my boat was in.

Thanks for the offer bob it's pretty late in the season and cold. Although I am sure Chris would love to come and take a look at it at some point.

I still have to stop down there anyway and take more notes of my own.

Last night my neighbor brought up that he is in the market for a 23' Seacraft and I told him about Behringer's boat. He would love to get a look at it. I think I know Chick from the SSMTC but if you guys wouldn't mind could you forward his contact info via PM? Thanks.

The 23 inboard. Best tiny go-to-sea boat ever built.

I was thinking maybe it was a silver hawk. What kind of power does it have?

That little SeaCraft inboard is sweet -- through the new CMD 4.2 in there and what a little canyon runner you would have!

Posted: Dec 19th, '11, 11:57
by PeterPalmieri
I read somewhere only 86 inboards were made between 75-79, not sure if that is accurate.

As I said in the original post Chris would have prefered an inboard and I'm sure if one come up for the right price he'd abandon the outboard project.

24 Silverhawk

I/O with the H350 Horizon motor with Bravo III, around 3.0mpg at 24kts around 50mph in the corner. Lift kept, she's over 10 years old and still running like a top. The bottom shot was taken east of the Bacardi out of Manasquan.

There are a few of them around, they'd be my first choice. Good lines, vinylester resin, minimal wood and safer.

Talked with another guy this morning who almost lost his sea craft with outboards while fishing on Saturday.

There is a 23 w/ 6bt 300hp full tower and trailer for sale down NC. The owner had the engine removed and the hole boat painted. She looks brand new. If anyone wants pic's let me know. The owner is a first class guy and is half owners of another boat and the seacraft doesn't get used.

Frank,

I'm curious what's he asking for it?

Peter,
At one point with a 99 F250 Boat and trailer was 49,000. I thought was a great deal but every one thinks its safer to go off shore with 2 OB than 1 deisel. Peter I'll call him tomorrow.

I had a potter built 20(19.6) 1976 hull with a two thirsty five Johnson on it when I lived in Islamorada. A stud of a boat stable at rest ran good in a chop and got smoother when you let it go, the only problem so the owner of tavernier creek marina said was "they sink" no foam , well that's why God made bilge pumps. Small version of a 23' wish I still had her.
