I purchased a set of rudders off of a extended 31 bertram. It was extended two feet. Now my question is can i machine the existing rudder port or do i need to buy new rudder ports.

The size of the new shafts are parallel 1 1/2" in diameter. i tried the search button on rudder ports and over sized rudders but to no avail.

One more thing if i have to purchase new rudder ports i guess i would have to take the dead rise off the transom and figure the new ports out.

I'm curious-an extended 31 Bertram? Any performance details?

Walter it was from a trust fund baby with to much money on his hands.
He put in 450 cummins i believe at first,then didnt like them so he is putting in Yanmars in the 400+ range.

I rode it with the cummins. what a tank, i think it weighed in at 20,000lbs. but the ride was very good man that thing could plow thru any head sea. I think he's got about 500,000.00 plus in it. No end in site.

top end was about 34 knots. Then one nite showing off and drinking he ran it aground coming in to the harbor. embarassing.

I am understanding that the new Rudder shafts are 1-1/2" in diameter all the way thru the packing area......is that what you are saying by "parallel"?

If that is the case you CANNOT bore the original rudder ports to fit the 1-1/2" Rudder shafts.

The original shafts are 1-1/2" on the bottom and 1-1/4" in the packing area.

If you attempt to bore the Rudder Port 1-1/2" all the way thru you will cut thru right into the Packing Nut threads.

It seems that it would cost less to have the shafts turned down to fit the current rudder ports rather than replacing the ports.

Harry thanks.. that is correct 11/2"thru the entire length.no step built into the shaft.

i thought of machining these shafts down.

Its not a bad job machining the shafts on those rudders......

A good shop could do it in just a few minutes.....(according to some of my customers)

But for the rest of us it will probably take a couple of hours each...

Harry i am going to check with our local machine shop and see what they can come up with. Thanks for your insite.

Now i little back ground on the extended 31. JP had 300 cummins in it at first, then went with 450 cats and now installing 480 yanmars.i will start a seperate thread on this. cool looking boat.

I will stop by the shop this week and take some pics. His interior is all Koa wood with radius doors. very cool.

should u consider new ports and can't find a fabricater, Stuart Propeller in Stuart Fl, can replicate new ones using the old ones as templates, they carefully copy the angles , made new struts for my 1 3/4 shafts , they also recommended for the torque of the new diesels, they do all the custom boats in south Florida
