Just got back from the Vineyard

We were staying in Vineyard Haven, but the Monster Shark Tourney was being held the next town over in Oak Bluffs. There was a 25 foot center console tied up behind us that entered the tournament. They went pre-fishing on Wednesday and caught the Mako pictured below. It was over 8 feet long and they guestimated the weight at over 800lbs. When they were cutting it up they found a 4 foot thresher shark in its stomach. We got a couple of steaks and grilled them up the next day. They were very good.

Doug, thresher tastes good, but I would have taken the Mako.

Thats a huge mako. I am going to Marthas Vinyard 3rd week of Sept. staying at the Ashley B&B in Edgartowne. First time there, are there any places people recommend that must go or see, either restaurants or sight seeing?
Thanks Mike

The only places that really have marinas are Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.

At OB, its the town dock and your backing up to a bulkhead thats just off the main street. It can be a lot of fun, but it been really gritty as the people from the ferry walk past your boat all day and a good portion of the night. Lots of good bars within a 3-8 minute walk. Decent beaches are either a dinghy or boat ride away. If you like the beach, you should take the boat to State Beach. Its a short run from either OB or Vineyard Haven. You can anchor right off the beach. The water is warm and clean and the bottom is nice and sandy. If you take the dinghy in, you can walk down the beach and jump off the bridge they filmed in Jaws. The marina heads in OB are also the public heads and they're pretty gross. The best deal in town is to walk across the street to the Wesley Hotel. Their bathrooms are also for marina guests. For $6 or $7 you get 2 tokens and a bag with a bath mat, a towel, soap, and shampoo. One token is to get into the bathroom and the other is for the shower. Each bathroom has a toilet, sink, and shower and they're usually very clean.

In Vineyard Haven the best place in my opinion is the marina at the Blackdog Tavern. The place next door is called Vineyard Haven Marina but they seem to be douche bags. There are no bars in VH as they were a dry town until a couple of years ago. You can order beer and wine at a restaurant as long as your eating. You can tell the folks at the Blackdog what you want for booze and they'll call a place that will deliver it. There's lots of good places to use the dinghy in VH. Definitely use the dinghy to go over the Lagoon Pond. The marina heads at the Blackdog are pretty clean. No charge to use it. They also have laundry.

You can rent a Jeep for around $200 for 24 hours and drive all over the island. If you do that you can check out Menemsha, the cliffs at Gayhead, and Edgartown (also filmed in Jaws).

Doug you missed Menemsha Harbor Marina Phone: 508-645-2846

It is first come first serve but if you call that morning and say your coming they will hold your slip. This is a quiet not fancy place with killer sunset and good fishing close by. You can do a day bus pass and go all around the Island by bus it worked out real nice. I was not for that Idea when I did it but it was good and you can hit all the bar's and not worry!

You're right. We actually stayed in Menemsha for one night this time. It was very rustic and came on the heels of 3 days at Cuttyhunk. Beautiful spot though.
