How long do projects last

My wife is asking me how long stuff should last. Seems like I just redid stuff a few years ago(10 maybe). Now have to redo it again.

Paint on boat topside /hull ?
Cockpit deck?
Engine box insulation?
Battery chargers?
Shaft packing?

just to name a few.

Now that's a real can of worms without a real answer. My "original" Nautilux decks showed rot after 5 years of a redo. Put in a teak one that has lasted 20 years. Put the charger inside under the dinette 5-6 years ago and it looks brand new as opposed to my previous ones that got rusty and connections corroded in the dampness of the bilge area. On and on...and a lot has to do with your own fussiness to say nothing about what you can afford.

10 years sounds like a good run to me. As you and I know nothing last forever. I don't know much about paint but I would think that its longevity depends on its exposure to the sun.

Now about the wife......around my house it works like this.....we have a "Needs to know" and a "Camphouse" rule.

I have Jo Ann (and she has me) on a "Needs to know" basis for some things......and some things on the boat she simply just don't "Needs to know"

My son and grandsons and I operate by Camphouse rules......what happens at the camp house stays at the camphouse....

I hope you realize that I/we are only kidding.......its a running gig around our house about how much we really pay for Red Snapper and just how many pairs of shoes does one woman need......LOL

Funny that this topic came up......about 2 weeks ago Jo Ann told me that she wants her Driveway fixed (its pretty bad) and she wants me to finish the Gazebo.......after a short discussion she suttlely reminds me that I am near the end of the DeNada project and that its her turn......

Let me tell you how I handled that......I thought for a moment or two and then said

YES MAMM! ! !

Paint on boat topside /hull ?
painted 24 years ago by previous owner....needs to be redone...hull looks okay...but topsides are another story...hated the color when prior owner painted it...still don't like and this has been on my list from the day I bought

Cockpit deck?
Nautalex...3-5 years.
New to me Glass Deck---1 year- then had to pull it up to change ethanol ruined tank.

Engine box insulation?
One season before the top started to flop down...

Battery chargers?
1st one was 11 years till I decided to go with an upgraded 3 bank...which only worked for a few days till it crapped out and I had to replace.

Shaft packing?
Did it 16 years ago when I bought boat.

My answer to your wife would be "It should last forever, but it don't" then walk away real fast....

But honestly...by the time your done with all the projects...its time to start over.

I agree If she knew how much $$ the boat costs. OOOO
Walter I moved my battery charger inside this last time also.

I have had the boat for over 17 yrs. and I am starting to think I need a major over haul. Redo inside and rear bulked. But If I do that, I want to glass in the windshield and change the side windows.

If the ristpin on one of my engines didn't loosen up I could do that stuff.
But have to wait a few more years.

I was just curious about how long stuff lasts. The previous owner bush painted the boat and it looked good. But is waring thin.
I had the hull pain 10 yr. rolled and tipped. When I polished it this spring it thin in places.

Just polling.

Walking into the bar, Mike said to Charlie the bartender,
"Pour me a stiff one - just had another fight with the little woman."

"Oh yeah?" said Charlie. "And how did this one end?"

"When it was over," Mike replied, "she came to me on her hands and knees."

"Really? Now that's a switch! What did she say?"

She said, "Come out from under the bed, you little chicken-shit."

coolair that is the price of a ladies handbag which is a must even if they are dressed casual (so i am told) . i should have invested in the coach corp. women replace them every three years along with those other must have nosense . more then the price of capt. patrict rudders which last the life of the boat!!!
