Thinking about going to montauk next month

I am in Massapequa and thinking about going to Montauk for a couple of days in late September.

I was thinking about going right out of Jones Inlet and taking the outside the whole way. Any pro's or con's?

Obviously the weather but any suggestions?

It's actually the best way if you have the fuel capacity to make the entire trip without the need to refuel. No inlet or tide problems no matter what the weather, if you make the harbor inlet, you're home free. Give the point a wide berth if the weather or wind against tide conditions exist. It will take a few more minutes but your crew will appreciate it. If you need Marina arrangements/details/recommendations, please let me know. If you prefer to take the "inside" route via LI Sound, time Plum Gut for a slack or beginning/end of a tide so you can run right through. If you take that route, watch out for Lobster pots in Gardiner's Bay as there are a lot of them and they get pulled under in strong tides and are hard to see. If you are unfamiliar with fishing Montauk, I'll be glad to fill you in. Walter

I'd take Fire Island inlet and save a few miles, otherwise the ocean is the way to go.

the ocean is the best way. far easier. like choosing an 80 mile trip on a superhighway or a one lane washboard road with a cliff on one side. even in my 14 foot boat the inside wasn't much fun.

Leave on a north wind and run the beach.

If you tell Brewster what day your going, maybe he can get hold of the weather bureau to make sure the wind will be from the North!

I have done some calculating and if I go out of Fire Island inlet it is 107 miles (93 nautical miles as per MaxSea program).

That is leaving from where my boat is docked in East Massapequa rt next to Ketchum ave (Amityville).

I have not done an accurate fuel consumption calculation on my boat. I am roughly figuring it does a bit better than 1.85 MPG (not nmpg). It may get 2mpg but I am not 100%.

@1.85 MPG I should have the range there and back. I was thinking of bringing an additional 50 gallons of fuel to give me 200 total gallons of diesel.

Of course sea conditions and weather can play a factor as well. I was planning to go Sept 19 and stay 2 nights. I was planning on leaving at like 6am to head out there to hopefully have calm conditions, that sound right?

I you want I will meet you at your inlet at 6am and do the run next to you.

That may sound like a plan! Not sure if I would slow you down though, I cruise @ 21MPH.

I will get in touch with you next week to see if its a go, I am 95% just have to square a couple off loose ends away.

Frank- Fuel at Montauk Marine Basin is presently at $3.29.9 a gallon. With 200 Gallons on board you will surely make it with plenty to spare. If you have any concern about return needs, you can take on a small amount there. Don't know how the price compares with diesel prices in Massapequa. Walter

fuel should not be a problem, i burned 53 gals to greenport, and 47 coming back, thats appox 12.5 gals per hr both engines, i was cruising at appox 18 kts

Looks like the Hurricane IGOR guy is potentially going to mess my trip up!

Sept 19 thru 21.

I would prob be concerned about rough conditions coming back, I guess we will have to wait and see.

BTW Walter thanks for the info for Montauk, I spoke to Marie and its all set. I am still waiting to see what the weather is going to be.

The one good thing about Montauk is the choice of return routes albiet one may take longer.

you can always run through the bay and then the inside. on a number of hurricane swells the ocean was only big for a day and even then if its a north wind the waves are so far apart that running isnt a challenge and the surface is pretty nice. i surfed montauk during one hurricane swell and there were 20 boats outside the break line fishing. it was well overhead.

Decided to cancel the trip, too bad I was really looking forward to it. I did not think it was wise to drive 100 miles to fish on Monday knowing that this was the forecast. We were going to even maybe go on the inside and thru the locks but still decided against it.

Oh well I will have to wait and do it sometime in the future.

I would have considered it, if it was my home territory. I have always liked to take a peek but not so far from home.

To bad. I want to make the same trip soon. I was jealous.
Now that daydreams is in the water and running after 4 years in my driveway.
maybe I can join you when you regroup.

There's plenty of good weather and Bass fishing all through October...
