Here's a link to boatdiesel.com about a guy who re-powered his mid-70's Bertram 38 with Volvo IPS drives:

That's a lot of dough, time, and money that he'll never get back, BUT, I do think its pretty cool.

Thanks for posting that article, I always like to see a boat gutted and rebuilt, learn something everytime. Man I thought I had a big project on my hands! If I'm not mistaken the entire project was done with epoxy resins, very nice. That's the way to go when your modifying a hull to that extent.

The ONLY thing I think I may have done differently is to add drainage in the structural grid system they installed. Without a doubt these little pockets will fill up with water and stay nasty. The core is structural foam so at least there is nothing to rot. But that's not to take away from the obvious quality of the work.

I wonder how they shimed those pods to make up for the angle of the hull. On new boats you can design the hull so it all works. That is a lot of shimming on re-fit.

The performance numbers look really good.

No one knows how those drives will hold up. Personally I fully expect they will make for good job security with mechanics and yards in the coming years, but damn...
