Russian luxury yachts offer pirate hunting cruises

When I first heard it I thought it was a sick joke, and, while the evidence is building, I still hope it is.
Ananova reports that luxury ocean liners in Russia are offering pirate hunting cruises aboard armed private yachts off the Somali coast.

Wealthy hunters pay £3,500 (US$5,800) per day to patrol the most dangerous waters in the world hoping to be attacked by raiders.

When attacked, they retaliate with grenade launchers, machine guns and rocket launchers, reports Austrian business paper Wirtschaftsblatt.

Passengers, who can pay an extra £5 a day for an AK-47 machine gun and £7 for 100 rounds of ammo, are also protected by a squad of ex special forces troops.

The yachts travel from Djibouti in Somalia to Mombasa in Kenya.

The ships deliberately cruise close to the coast at a speed of just five nautical miles in an attempt to attract the interest of pirates.

'They are worse than the pirates,' said Russian yachtsman Vladimir Mironov. 'At least the pirates have the decency to take hostages, these people are just paying to commit murder.'

That has to be some thrill, maybe I am warped but it sounds good to me!

These pirates are in the same class that hacks heads off of innocent people and has no regard for you or anyone you may love.

If this isnt some entrepreneur going to the extreme to make some money, I dont know what is.

I rather like the idea. Doing it "our" way hasn't worked, sooooo..... Violence only understands violence. Kill em all.

Its like the Q ships the Brits and Japs used to lure in subs in WWI (German) and WWII (German and US). I like it. Whack a Somali!

A known consequence of piracy is death. They assume the risk when undertaking it. The cruise does not say much for the rest of the world though!

The fruits of an inability to adhere to and enforce the laws that exist is to take extraordinary solutions to the problem. Arizona is a good example. So is this. The Russians did it right. Think they'll televise the trial of the guy they captured? That poor bastard will rue the day he ever considered piracy. Hope he likes salt and cold weather.

The link was sent to me by a shooting buddy. While questionable, I haven't completely lost my mind these days.

I like the comments in bold by the sailworld poster and the Russian yachtsman.

People who clearly don't understand the possible consequences of being boarded or captured by pirates.

This is no different in theory than cops using under cover woman to pose as prostitutes to bust johns or do under cover drug buys.

If you fall for the bait and produce a weapon, the cops are going to defend themselves with deadly force.

Another of those double standard things... Cops do it and it's called a sting, civilians do it and it's called illegal entrapment.

Just because it's not true...don't mean it can't be.

Walter...Catch and Release like my dad used to with Bluefish when he was going for Stripers...Crank it in, "Gaff It", Carefully remove hook so as not to bend Spoon and then Release. Catch and Release.

Bruce...Glad to hear the Sailboat World Post was sent to you...you can't always account for your Buddies and Acquaintances...
