all my friends know i heat with wood so i often get anonymous donations. someone left some small logs in front of the house so i cut em up and my son split em. (i tried swinging the ax one handed lefty but its harder then it looks). anyway in 30 years of wood splittin here....never saw this before. very straight grained and burns well even green.

Looks like black walnut.
Al

This oak & cherry is part of a load the city dropped off. No one else was willing to take on 4' diameter logs.

I think that what you've got there is some Al Gore Wood.

Allow me to explain:

From the photo, I can clearly see that it is very soft, and also semi-white on the outside.

The first clue.
...i tried swinging the ax one handed lefty but its harder then it looks

The wood in question is very difficult to penetrate, even with left-handed logic.

The second clue.
....never saw this before. very straight grained and burns well even green.
Self explanatory.

It burns up well. On it's own. Even when green.

You got yourself some Al Gore wood there.

When you light it, try not to pay any attention to it as it burns, else the fire may grow uncontrollably stupid

Huge difference between the sapwood and the heartwood...

Looks kinda like it is in the Lysiloma genus. Like our Wild Tamarind that I use
for eveything from BBQ'in to countertops.
These were just split right? Haven't had time to oxidize yet? If you look at 'em now is the heartwood noticeably more red?
Sweet, nutty aroma on the fresh split?

Hmmm, wonder what it is.....

this wood splits if you look at it cross eyed.......very easy to split. i probably could have done it with a hatchet.(i've been doing that lefty all winter) the sap wood is quite firm and white. the heartwood looks like walnut. there is so much expensive ornamental landscaping out here it could be anything from anywhere. hopefully whoever dumped it will tell me.

Hmmm, wonder what it is.....
Its really his latest carving..

Randall,
With construction down, 2x4 and 2x6's are getting hard to come by in scrap.

This year I set out and collected 63 christmas trees. While the pine burns kinda fast, it smells real good. See if you can find a gentile section of Long Island next year that doesn't use fake trees.

Its for the fire pit out back and its hard to get wood down here unless you buy it from HD for 6 small logs at 9 bucks.

I just had an fireplace insert inserted today. Sorry, had to say it that way, if for no one else, I chuckle...

Anyway, I have pallets coming out of my figurative ears, and am eager to fire them up. They are often stunning hardwood. Mahogony, maple, oak. they burn hot, but fast.

Randall, that is some very interesting wood. Bruce, no concerns about chimney fires burning all that pine? Lots of creosote!

Oops. Just saw the words Fire Pit. Yes, perfect for that!!!!!! And you are right about the smell. Dad has an xmas tree farm. I know it is a long drive, but you can have all the trees you want... :)

bruce...when my son was in elementary school...he was the only jewish kid in the school. lots of christmas trees but most wind up buried in the sand to shore up the primary dune. you can burn any kind of wood if you regularly clean your chimney. i'll burn anything. (cept plywood or CCA)

Bruce,

You beat me to it......I also think it is Randall's latest carving, and it just looks like split wood in a wheelbarrow. He's fooling us all once again (like when Uncle Vic tried to turn the page of his "Legend of Bertram" carving"!

When we bought this Shop building it had an Oak Floor.

Contracter wanted a thousand or so to cut it up and $1500.00 to cart it away.

Gave our guys some circular saws, bought a couple blades and spent $200 for a woodburning stove.

That first winter the place was heated by and large by that woodburning stove and the old Oak floor.

Randall; That looks like a birch of some type. Are you sure it is not a carving of yours?

Dug,
Watch yourself on those pallets. Many are treated with chemicals.

Randall: Is it hard or soft wood? It look like it would make great scales for knives or pistol grips if it is hard!!
