Jo Ann and I once owned a Volkswagon......my dad had 3 of them over the years,

You would not believe the punishment that I personally put them thru.....they are incrediable vehicles.

We would (in my dads car) go as fast in reverse as we could then pop it out of reverse and into 1st gear, rev the engine and pop the clutch....leaving "J" tire marks on the pavment.

But the coolest thing was to go fast in reverse then clutch it, put it in second gear, cut the steering wheel hard and fast, briefly tag the parking brake, straighten out the steering and WALLA! ! ! you are now moving in the same direction only the car is now moving in a forward direction.....and we NEVER broke anything.......I'm telling ya, these cars were nearly indestructable

Somehow I can't see myself changing the belt on my 6Bs that way.

In 1956 my father bought the first beetle sold in Richmond. It was the dealer's personal car. At the end of the first year it had 34,000 miles. and the speedometer broke. 34k was about average for us.
At the end of four years he was pissed because it had a burnt valve. He never had the valves adjusted nor changed the oil.
Damn, I loved that car. I learned to drive in it and got my first. . .
maybe another time.
