Basic wiring 101

I want to go thru my wiring on my boat and it is satisfactory. Since I have converted to diesel I need to make my own harness for the engines, since the engines did not come with them.
I have harnesses coming from my flybridge and have all of them labeled for their respective functions.
I know the ignition "on" will go to the fuel cut-off solenoid
The "cranking" wire will go to the starter solenoid
my oil pressure and water temperature senders are no prob either.
What about the alternator?
will a wire go directly to the battery?
what will connect to the voltage gauge? from what?
