Montauk Legends roundtable & dinner, Thursday and Friday
I just found out that there will be an "Old Timer's Roundtable" at the Montauk Yacht Club on Thursday at 5 pm, and a sit-down Awards Dinner there on Friday at 7 pm sponsored by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce. Retired Charterboat Captains of yesteryear who fished the waters of the Eastern end of Long Island have been invited to tell their tales of yesteryear, answer questions and just plain have a good time. Thursday's event will be held under a tent and as I understand it, attendance is free. Friday's event will give plaques and awards, have a silent auction, etc and has the modest price of $25 per person (you can't eat anywhere out East for that price). Sounds like a fun event and a much needed replay of fishing history. If you have specific questions, call Carl Darenberg Jr at 631-668-5900, who I am sure will be glad to answer them. Tell him Walter of the Bluebeard gave you his number.

Walter,
Sorry I missed this post on the C of C event and am not around this evening. It would have been great to hear from the old timers who put Montauk on the sport fishing map. We fished Montauk in the late 60's and early 70's mostly out of the Deep Sea Club. I am not sure any of those captains are still alive. If they were, they would not believe how Montauk has changed.

I went to the Thursday evening roundtable and it was great! There were TV cameras taking it in so I hope someone somewhere will show it. As a matter of information, the new Montauk Yacht Club has decorated part of it's interior with big pictures of the fish, boats and catches of yesteryear! The photos were gotten from the family collections of the Tumas, Darenbergs, and Edwards as well as others, and blown up professionally and framed. Worth stopping by for a drink if you're ever in the area. Reminded me of the old Deep Sea Club and the Club at Port Eads, both of which don't exist any more. As Debbie Tuma told me, they are working on dedicating a whole room to Montauk fishing history.
