Magnetic sender for flywheel tooth counter

I have cummins and they are wired for tachometers off the alternators.

I have acquired a sender that is threaded that mounts into the bellhousing. It is part number 3039524 and is listed as such.

It has a 2-wire plug.

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was anything else that is need to set this device up to work with a tachometer.

Where would these two wires (the plug) need to go?

Any help would be appreciated.

A tach that works off the alternator will not work with a magnetic pickup....you will neeed new tachs that are designed for magnetic pickups. Screw the pickup into the hole until it bottoms, then back it off a half a turn and lock it with the locknut. The two wires go to the two terminals on the tach. You have to set the DIP switches on the tach for the number of teeth on the flywheel. All Cummins B series engines have 159 teeth on the flywheel.

Magnetic pickup is a much better system than the alternator drive which counts the frequency of the ac current poduced by the alternator. I converted mine from alternator to magnetic years ago and have had zero issues since.

Thank you Viceroy.

I actually dont have tachometers yet, these engines are a new install for this boat. Zero hour rebuilds.

I had twinscan tachometer setup for the gassers and figure I need to get new tachs.

Screw the pickup in till it bottoms out on the teeth and then backup a turn and a half.

Twinscan tachs will accept all input signals.

You think the twinscans tach's may work?

How would the flywheel tooth count be calibrated, it has been a while since I looked at the rear of the twinscans. Do they have a calibration dial???

I appreciate the input

I found an online manual for the twinscan tachometers

http://floscan.com/html/Manuals/TwinScanTach.pdf

I guess I will set them at one of these:

50 RPM synchronized resolution - RED switch = B BLACK switch = 6
20 RPM synchronized resolution - RED switch = B BLACK switch = E

scenario L113-

Got a set of Faria "Chesapeake series" magnetic pick up tacks in the box (0-4000 RPM) I would sell cheap if you are interested. I erroneously ordered these only to find out that the PTO mounted tack pickup I have on my engines emulates an alternator sender.

Thanks Andre.
But on the way out here I passed by Baton Rouge at 10pm, a little late for a drop in.

We'll see how the return trip plays out. May head north and across 20 for a change. Got another week to go.

Thanks Andre.

This 50 degrees in the morning and 80 at 4pm is quite something to get used to.
The temp swings more than John Holmes in a porn flick.

The biggest kick out here is almost every morning there's a fresh deer kill from a truck on the side of the road. You can't pick em up or run afoul of dept of game. So the buzzards get to eat what would be a good meal.

Anybody got a good recipe for Clysdale horse?
