Has anyone repowered a B-20 with a Mercruiser 3.0? The original straight 6 was rated at 165 hp and the 4 cyl 3.0 is rated at 130 but, as I understand it they were rated differently. I was also told Mercruiser was going to fuel inject that same engine for greater horsepower but I haven't been able to find out if that was true or worth waiting for. Walter

Walter,

The original straight six was rated at the flywheel and the new 3.0s are rated at the prop.

I have been told that you lose 10-15% in the outdrive, so I think the 165 really more like 145 hp at the prop.

My B20 had the original 150 straight six (more like 135 at the prop).

The torque curve on the two engines is drastically different. The 3.0 spins up to 4800 rpm I think the old straight sixes really didn't like going much more than 4000. So cruise will be different.

There is (was) a Bahia Mar on yachtworld.com with a 3.0 in it. You might try calling the owner to see how it performs.

THe V-blocks do fit in the engine compartment, although the space is TIGHT.

The 4.3 with Alpha is about 2 grand more than the 3.0.

I'd go for the 4.3 before the 3.0.

My $0.02.
