Giants in the Mud Hole

Yesterday my friends went to the Mud Hole south of Montauk. Hooked up on a giant for 4 hours and snap. The angler was Hank Altenkirch. My buddy said he gave them a lesson in fighting fish stand up. Hank is not 21 years old and my buddy said he is an animal and a living legend. When the wind stops I think we will make the trip

Brewster,
Before I run out there, let me clarify..... did you mean the butterfish hole? the mudhole is East of Montauk. Until last week, there had been a good amount of medium bluefins near the horns.

Glad to hear that ole' Hank is having fun!! I had the pleasure of meeting him on the first TSL trip! Got to party with him in Panama City! Great guy and a fantastic rod builder. I got to use some of the rods that he so graciously brought on the trip. Fantastic! Tell him I said hello if you see him!

Butterfish Hole. 165 from the point and you'll hit the furthest inshore finger at about 12-14 miles. When it drops to 180' you're at the start of it. 180 degrees puts you on the finger's western edge. Once you're in the 180 depth, anything can happen, although I have in the past hit Bluefin and even a White marlin starting at the 150' depth. Real key is the draggers. That's the magnet and I assume the fuel costs have had them try those waters before steaming further. Walter

Sorry the butterfish hole is the spot. I refer to it wrong all the time.
