8 ga tinned, marine grade, wire is the minimun requirement that should be used for connecting various items to the bonding system. It is preferable to solder all lugs to the wire & use adhesive linned heat shrink tubing to further protect the lug attachment.
12 ga is way too small.
Every metal object that is in contact with the water the boat sits in should be bonded...
