The high tide got the boat off the sand bar after waiting 8 hrs. The location was the big tidal area just north of the Shinnecock Inlet. You can't miss it and neither did I.

Boat was out of the water first thing Monday AM The cutlass bearing needs to be replaced on the port side. That strut was taken off by noon time along with the stbd prop. So both props and that strut are in the shop and should be O.K. Wednesday. The boat should go back in the water Thursday AM

The trip for me to Montauk is 90nm each way. I had traveled some 35 miles. So the gas bill I didn't spend should more than pay for the screw up. Come to think about it, the fuel bill would have been $1000.00US Jeez, the short haul is $150US and what could a new bearing pressed into the strut along with the two props be? $300US? Hell, I made money.
I can't wait for next yr. But don't tell Maureen.

Oooch..not the happy picture I had hoped to see.
I'm glad that is all the damage you sustained, could have been worse. It's amazing you saved more in fuel then the damage cost.

Dick,

Sorry that it happened, but glad that it was not worse.....at least it was a soft grounding. Most of us have been there before. Anyone get thrown into the bulkhead, or did you have time to back off the throttle prior to?

Dick,

Count your lucky stars that it was a new moon or you would have never had enough water to refloat your boat. I can't wait for next year either, or my new engines, I just plan going on the outside, no matter what the conditions are....................see ya!!

dick i went 17 miles west out the fire island inlet and from there all the way to montauk on the outside.we were pouring on the coal at 30kts. there was 2'seas and a beautiful ride.on the way back we went for a tour around robins island,gardiners island and stayed overnight at shelter island.we went thru the shinnicock locks and realize the outriggers and ant.will not clear the bridge pull down the out riggers in time but the ant. bounce along the underside of the bridge.we went directly out the inlet were dick went aground and drop the hammer.205 miles on 3/4 tank of fuel not bad could have done better if i slowed down but what the hell you only get to do this once a year!!!.

randall i saw that beautiful tall ship outside of greenport quite a site.i went over to see the "ruins",i have seen it on charts but never up close.the raymarine 120 series was very accurate and a big help going thru areas i never been in.i have the chartplotter with radar overlay on one side and a 80 series sonar on the starboard side so when the chardplotter show a drop off sure enough the dsm-sonar indicated the exact dropoff.robins island is a beautiful place for boating.
boat parade are you referring to the 31 bertram parade outside the harbor of montauk? or are you talking about the boat traffic going into greenport?

no...if you would have gone around the south of shelter island past sag harbor you would have seen the annual "boat party"...few hundred boats and a live band on a barge............

yup i went on the north side.my dauthter in law informed me after the fact .she said if was a few boats years back and now it`s grown into a all out bash.next year you will bring your wife and patrick to east brander parkway shelter island.the house has 400' on the water and is hardly used come by boat or land and we can have a bar b que after the montauk get together.

Dick, the guy I learned all my boating from was one of the smartest people I ever knew. He was very organized and had a procedure and contingency plan for everything. Under accidental grounding Item 1 was check to see if any crew are injured, Item 2 was retrieve a large piece of canvas from the sail locker and rig to cover the transom so nobody can identify the yacht! I think you blew item 2!
