TWIC update...

Post by Dug »

I thought this might be of interest. It seems they have pushed out the implementation date...

For those of you sweating over the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), you can breathe a little easier - the Transportation Security Administration has moved the TWIC implentation deadline back to April 15, 2009. The previous dealine was set for September 25, 2008 and now allows mariners and other transportation workers an additional 9 months to apply for the TWIC.

The TWIC application process has presented a fair amount of confusion for mariners and we've compiled a brief FAQ to clarify some of the basic questions about the TWIC.

What is the TWIC?
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) was developed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in response to the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002. The MTSA requires the use of a biometric identification credential by individuals who require unescrted access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels. Before issuing a TWIC, TSA conducts a security threat assessment on the applicant, and works with the FBI and DHS to conduct a criminal background check, terrorist threat assessment, and immigration check.

Who needs a TWIC?
An estimated one million individuals will be required to obtain a TWIC. This includes Coast Guard-credentialed merchant mariners, port facility employees, longshoremen, truck drivers, and others requiring unescorted access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels regulated by MTSA. In other words, if you hold a Captains License or MMD you need to get a TWIC.

When do I need to get the TWIC?
The date that all mariners need to have the TWIC by has been moved back to allow for more time to implement the program, the original date of September 25, 2008 is no longer valid. You have until April 15, 2009 to get your TWIC.

How do I get the TWIC?
To begin the application process, you must pre-enroll online by visiting http://www.tsa.gov/twic and clicking on "Pre-Enrollment". You will complete the application using the website, and once complete, schedule a time and date to visit your local Enrollment Center.

How do I find my local Enrollment Center?
The list of Enrollment Center locations is available online by visiting http://twicinformation.tsa.dhs.gov/twic ... hedule.jsp

How much does it cost?
The fee for a TWIC card will be $132.50 and the credential is valid for five years. Those who hold a valid Merchant Mariner Document or License issued after February 3, 2003 may pay a reduced fee of $105.25. Those applicants choosing to pay the reduced fee must present MMD or License at the time of enrollment. If the reduced fee is paid, the TWIC expiration date will be 5 years from the date of your license or MMD.

What if I have more questions?
TSA's TWIC Program Help Desk can be reached at 1-866-DHS-TWIC (1-866-347-8942). The help desk will be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. EST.

Don't bring a copy of your license. They want the ORIGINAL. Also a valid Passport and second legal picture ID. Walter
