I think you may be refering to the "Spark Plug Gap"...........the distance between the electrode and the tang on the spark plug base (distance that the spark will jump)

Most spark plugs in those days are "Gapped" at .032" (32 thousanths of an inch)

corrected................ac delco marine sparks were gapped at 40....regapped today and problem gone....just wanna make sure...
