repowering the PLAYPEN

just blew a motor on sat.been having problems all summer so now decision has to be made to repower,leaning towards 315hp yanmars.questions i would like answered;
1 what should my 31 cruise at?
2 what gear ratio trans?
3 what size shafts
4 props.
5 boat is in o.c.n.j. who can install?
6 what are my 250 cummins and trannys worth,1990 with approx.2450 hours,1 runs great,1 seems to be aqua locked.

Charlie,

1 what should my 31 cruise at? -- 28 to 30 kt (32 - 34 kt wot)
2 what gear ratio trans? -- 2:1
3 what size shafts -- 1 1/2" (perferably Aquamet 22)
4 props. -- Start with 20x24 4 blade


The Yanmar 6LPA is one of the models that is being affected by the tierII EPA regs & may not be available much longer, (if it hasn't already dissapeared from the new market), and the new common rail fly by wire replacement may be your only Yanmar choice.

Why don't you get another Cummins 250 factory rebuilt? 2500 hours is not a lot of hours for a Cummins Diesel. Walter

Charlie,

I can confirm Patrick's comments since he and Bruce handled my repower. I have the 6LP-STE 315s and I cruise at an honest 30 knots (full fuel, full water, four guys, cooler, moderate amount of gear, bimini top) using the setup Patrick described. Needless to say, I usually find it more comfortable to cruise in the 24-26 knot range, and slower per the sea conditions.

i thought about going with remans,but here is what i am wrestling with, all said and done i would still have a 22 or 23 knot cruise, and running to the canyons i could cut off alot of time{assuming that conditions are favorable}

6LP/315 should be around for a while.
Already meets tier 2.

The 6LY series is going away.


BTW, Mt. Laurel has a nice jail.
Spent two nights there back in the mid 70's.

Charlie-why would that be? I have 210's and cruise at 21-22. Vic has 250's and cruises at an honest 24-25. I think he's propped with 21X24's. or 20x24's. I'm pushing 20x20's lightly cupped and am probably underpropped. Mine is the older heavy hull with a heavy teak deck. You should be cruising faster than that. Walter

in the 70s mt.laurel was a farm town,now it is so overbuilt you would not believe it , did not know they even had a jail back then,thought they just tied you to a tree!

2. gear 2:1
3. shaft 1.5"
4. 4 blade Nibral, 20x23

I would ask yourself what you want to cruise the boat at speedwise, and what speed you think the waters you travel will allow you to cruise at most of the time, and then I would size the engines appropriately.

If you have a boat that will cruise at 30, but you can't use it at that speed, what good does it do? If you think you will spend 95% of your time cruising at 24 knots, not 30, then the 315's are the wrong engine...

Just some advice.

Otherwise they are great engines! the 240's allow more room to work around them, and are a bit more stingy on fuel, but the cruise is about 4-6 knots less depending on where you put the throttles. They work for me because in NE, I am not always able to cruise at 30 knots. More like 22-24 without killing the boat or me.
