Brewster,

Back in 2001 I was fishing the Star Island shark tournament when one hit one of our shark baits. We thought we had hooked the leviathan!

Until we got it to the boat.

We had pictures so we had proof. But holy cow! When that thing breached, we all took a step back!

Awesome video!!!

We caught a blue marlin right after that was taken so we retained some mojo

A mola mola is also called an ocean sunfish. Over the years, I have seen many of them jump. People never want to believe that they can, until they see one themselves.

I agree Steve. Heck, if you run up on one on the surface, you'd think it was the most unaggressive, useless fish ever seen! They come into the Race off of Fishers Island once in a while and they just flop around floating with the current, and they have such small mouths. I always thought they ate jellyfish or something.

Reality is clearly different. I tell you that when the one hit the shark bait, it didn't come completely out of the water. It was only in view for a brief moment. Picture it coming out up to where it ends, and falling back into the water. We thought it was a mako head that came up but didn't come out any further than the side fins. We thought we had the tournament for a second or two. Until we realized that if it were a mako that big, it would be a hell of an argument to get it to the boat, and this thing didn't argue quite as much as we expected.

In hindsight, it was one of the funniest fishing experiences I have had.
