Has anyone tried Progressive lately?, do they still do older boats I have a 74

I have my ‘78 insured with them. They are also covering my 1966 Oday Marriner. I accessed Progressive through USAA when I needed liability coverage higher than they could carry.

I don't have experience with them, but I heard from someone that had them, they are tough on claims.

I have Geico through Boat US but I am not really pleased with their attitude lately. I had to get a survey. Not a problem I have been expecting it for years. But once the survey was submitted there was a lot of BS in the survey. Like, I didn't have a copy of the Rules of the Road on the boat. The surveyor also said that they boat was in good shape, but he recommended I paint the topsides.


There were also a couple of good on point suggestions from the surveyor.

But their response to the survey was that I have to do everything the surveyor said, or I will have an issue if I have a claim. That is just too broad of a statement, and if I ever do have a claim, I want to see them blame it on the gel coat on the forward deck that is fading

They should have told me exactly what they wanted, because there is nothing that says you need the rules of the road on the boat.

I have heard they are trying to get rid of older boats, so maybe they are giving me hints.

I have progressive on my 1976 28' Bert. Its way to expensive. In my business I don't really have any issue with them approving claims, I do have issues with them sending a check.

Boat US is the best, except on older boats. You have to be careful with who they insure you through. Sometimes the fisrt 6 months they will only pay 50% of a claim, and they also have lay-up periods where they will not pay a claim if you use your boat. I used to insure my boat from March-Sept. The other six months covered non use of the boat, damage in the Marina etc..

State Farm, Farmers mutual suck terribly. They do everything they can to avoid paying.

I never insured my 31 Bertram. I tried but could not find an actual insurer (which I think I posted about earlier).

I have a 1967 B20. Converted a Bahia Mahr to a CC with OB/ Bracket and had a full cap off restore done by Josh Stoner (You can see the boat on his Instagram, Stoner BoatWorks. Was able to insure the boat with Travelers for what I paid Josh after furnishing my detail invoice and a survey

Peter, I have USAA for the house and cars. I was unaware that they will cover boats? Or, as you said, up to a certain amount?

When I bought my sailboat in 1978, I insured her with USAA. About 15 years ago, when my Marina increased the required liability coverage, USAA sent me to Progressive. When I bought my Bertram, Progressive added her to my policy with a $25k agreed value without a survey.

I'm not sure what the business relationship is between USAA and Progressive, but when I call Progressive, they know that I am a USAA customer.

If I understand this correctly, it seems that Progressive only picked up the extra liability on the Sailboat, acting in this case a re-insurer.

Is the Bertram fully insured with Progressive or does USAA still maintain a policy for it?

Both of my boats are fully insured by Progressive.
