I’d like to get a moisture meter to get an idea of what I need to do on my B20. Any recommendations for an amateur?

Looks like they run from $600 to $1500. I would think for home use, not being used all the time you might be able to keep it towards the $600 side, but I have no idea if that will do what you are looking for.

before spending $600 on a moisture meter just take some core samples from the underside and hit the surfaces with a hammer.

I asked this over on THT, and recommendation for a good meter was a Tramex, and for a cheap meter (under $50) was a Dr Meter. I’m going to get a cheap meter from Amazon and try it out.

Gaining the experience and knowledge on how to decipher the readings can be more important than the meter. Similar to sounding a hull, we hear the tap tap tap, we may even hear the sounds change from spot to spot, knowing what and why is the reason we shell out money for surveyors.

That said, I'd say its a good way to learn by taking readings then opening up and seeing whats what and why. Wet, core, contaminants, thickness, materials, backing etc.
