Italian Marine Diesel engines

Was recently at “The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show in Orange Beach AL.
Saw the new(ish) FPT N67 Diesel Engine, made in Italy.

Does any of the Brain Trust here, have any knowledge, or know someone who has retrofitted this engine into their boat?

They are trying to break into the US market, and at first glance seem to have an interesting product.

Isn’t is the same engine as the Cummins 6.7? For some reason I’m thinking Cummins and FPT share similar architecture.

If so, searching the mercury may turn up more results.

Well FPT stands for Fiat Powertrain Technologies - or at least it used to.

Looks like they have been acquired by IVECO -

I know they make some of the smaller John Deere diesels

IVECO was or is a Cummins based engine. I remember looking at them, and when I repowered, the owner of ExtremeDiesel.com had his boat next to mine and they were putting Iveco's in his boat. When I asked the dealer about them, he said they were pretty much Cummins, and for the owner of the boat is was not a problem since he had access to getting OEM parts due to his business.

I know cummins and iveco used to have a joint venture that ended somewhere around 2008, and mercury had a joint venture with cummins that ended in 2012 or 2013.
When the mercury cummins relationship ended, FPT became the engine supplier for mercruiser 6.7.
It would not surprise me if they (the 6.7)were all the same long block and mabe even the same fully dressed, but i dont have first hand knowledge of that. I would think that would make people feel better about the fiat, or worse about the cummins.

The real issue is getting parts for them.

I am sure they are reliable engines, but even reliable engines eventually have problems. I remember when Steyr diesel was trying to make inroads. I know Kevin, who has not been on in a while had Steyr. Not sure if he had any issues getting parts. But here in NJ we don't really run across them.

If Cummins parts fit, it makes life easier. If you are out in the boon
docks at least you will know you have a chance finding parts.

FYI- I can say that, mom was 100% Italian… dad, not so much with German, Swedish n Irish. Yup I be a mutt n a half. Great if yours dog…
