This post was on facebook on the bertram society.
I thought id pass it along.

Looking for owner of 1963 FBSF. Hull #287. I have the original “book” that goes with the boat. Signed by Richard Bertram. I would be like the currant owner to have it.
Thank you.

Hey, Tony, if the guy doesn't show you're close enough to be eligible as a runner up!
315 is close to 287 !

The 287 means that this boat was the 187th 31 produced by Bertram. I would say some time around 1962 or 1963. The 315 designates it as 31 foot Fly Bridge cruiser.

Oops, thanks Tony.
Tommy had explained these numbers in the past somewhere...

However, this logic shouldn't be the same as in the 28.
My ending numbers 1172 denote prod. Nov. 72, not the type of the boat. Is this correct?

I am assuming you are taking the number off of the upper Starboard corner on the transom. If it is that is interesting. On my Hull No. The G in BERG denotes the month of production.

The Hull number on your boat should be cast into the hull so it is part of the hull. In the US depending on the State the boat is registered in, if the boat does not have a number designated by the manufacturer, the State will assign a number. This then gets attached to the hull, usually by the use of an aluminum plate that has the number engraved into the Plate.

Hull numbers designated by the manufacturer became mandatory in 1972. Similar to an VIN number on a car.

Yours should follow a similar pattern.
