Cup Holders? Where and what kind?

Post by Ironworker »

I know you guys have solved this problem so please help a newbie. Where to put them and what kind did you use.

The cockpit is my biggest issue but the flybridge is also a problem. I have a solution albeit not a good one for the Flybridge. The cockpit is tough.

Pictures are most appreciated!

Look up the Product Sea Sucker. I use one in the Wheelhouse, one in the passengers quarters. Pumped up occasionally the do not come off. Removed easily to place on another flat surface should you chose. Very reliable. EarleyBird

This is what I have in the cabin and also in the v-berth.
I also have two up in the fb, mounted on the vertical surface.
Very happy with them, sturdy, indestructible and easy to position with two screws.

On deck I couldn't find any solution, but this.
With holes of various diameters according to what we usually drink.

Yannis,

That gives me a decent idea on how to handle the cup holder issue. I've ripped out most of the structure in the cockpit and have thought long and hard about rod holders but not cup holders. Rehabbing these boats are complicated.

Earleybird,

I have used some of those with mixed results. I'm looking to build something in permanently but I appreciate the idea.

There are a couple of nice options Birdsall marine has a few that go into the existing rod holders. A company mate series has a few replacement rod holders with built-in cup holders. A company called amarine on Amazon also has some nice cupholders that are just quarter inch polished stainless tubing that I used on my flybridge. Birdsall Marine also makes a very nice folding and removable seat that I purchased and they are great people to deal with. Good luck

I nominate this for the B31 "Understatement of the Year" Award. The prize will be a legal pad to extend the to-do list!

My buddy re-did a seacraft and he added 4 cup holders into the top of the center console, when fishing on his boat, I found that they were perfect for holding cellphone as well as a temp storage space for lures, fishing plyers, etc

I've added 4 to my boat in a similar fashion and hope that they are just as useful on my boat. They were roughly $25 for 4 on ebay.

Ktm,

My buddy’s Fountain has exactly the same on the sides of the console, I think elsewhere too.
But they can only hold alu cans or glasses, not larger water bottles or liquor bottles.

I thought Yannis kept his bottles in the neat little slide panel he has in the cockpit near the engine hatch. After watching Yannis create storage on his boat, I would put money on the fact those bottles are well protected.

Carl, Tony,

I’m an easy target, aren't I?

I mentioned liquor bottles because someone MAY want to store those somewhere.
We want however to be able to store the plastic 1.5lt water bottles, and the recessed holders suggested by Ktm, or the collapsing ones suggested by me, are not suitable. Unfortunately, only the custom teak holders will do for those.
I don't know how you guys drink water and in what type of containers you bring it along.
Just because the 1,5lt bottles wont fit, I bought a 400ml stainless thermos which does fit and I bring it up to the fb. This will provide me with cold water until my next destination.

I don't know Tony...I didn't get the feeling Yannis was all that concerned about water bottles bottles in his earlier post. What do you think?

The ones I bought won't fit a mid-size gatorade bottle, I'm happy that they fit a dunkin's cup and store crap that usually falls all over the boat.

I also have something like this but the suction cups are suspect to loosen if you use them under way

Exaggerations...
But I like them!

Still, I believe that this stainless collapsible one is best, where there’s a surface to be attached to (cabin, flybridge).

For the deck, I tend to think that the recessed ones, perhaps even a bit wider to accommodate Ktm’s gatorade ! is the simplest method, as ANYTHING else hanging from a gunnel or elsewhere will eventually become a nuisance.

Not too shabby!

I’d make my own that would just hold 3 drinks in line, as I think that all this is too bulky and cumbersome.
I’d make two, one on each side.
You have to see where they store while underway though...

They make several different sizes. The largest one has a Magna level lock rod holder insert which folds down about the size of a brief case. I though about building one but frankly the boat show price was $300 for the Butler and $150 for the small one. The level lock insert is $80 so I figured at $220 for the tray, my time was more valuable working on the boat.

You can also get a variety of mounting systems but mine will like get mounted on the icebox next to the sink until I get the interior refurbished or a rod hold in the stern of the boat, next to the bait table.

I think that is a great option for when you have guests and are just hanging out.
