Sunday is Mothers Day and for the past 26 yrs I take the family to Fire Island for lunch. This yr there will be 21 people on board. The trip is 6nm. My bro-in-law thinks I can't carry that many people. My wife wants to make two trips. I figure the weight will be two tons. Yes, I will have life jackets for all.

I say "yes". And you?

That's an average of 190.lbs per person. This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "I come from a big family"!

Plug up your scuppers, Buddy, and get the engines cranked and warmed up before you load the crew. Check your bilge pumps. If your gas tank isn't full already, don't put any more in. You'll be pushing the limits...

Two trips could be a wise decission. It ain't like you're running to the caynons.

We had the Sarita loaded for a three day, 170 + 200 (bladder) fuel, 8 cs beer 2 cs water 4 big ice chest full, 5 50s 2 80s and bait, and the three of us. I bet we were pushing 4000lb easy? We had to put a good dent in the beer just to get on plane.

So you could get on a plane, eh? Nice. I like the way you think, Rob.

It will look like a Haitian Migration with all them people.

I would really consider two trips, especially if children are in the mix. Then again I have never seen a 31' with 21 people on board maybe its fine.

Could you do a dry run with a bunch of guys from dock to approximate weight, lure'm in with beer and take for a short ride.

Rob, why so much water?

Yeah but Dick are you going to wear those pants with the little whales on them ? If so your weight can be deducted from the total (as you will be very light in your loafers).

Another thing, be sure if you see a Whale, Manta Ray, Whale Shark or anything interesting that the folks on board have not seen before DO NOT SAY A WORD!!! If they run to Port side you are shit out of luck.

The water is to wash your pits, beer just makes them gets sticky.

The original Hull Capacity tag on my 1969 25 says "16 Persons at 150lbs Per Person" or "2400 LBS Persons and Gear"

I would hate to see 16 people on a 25 Bertram.

Make sure you have a PFD for each human.

Good luck.

Two trips and to be safe. Its your family. Its only six miles. And never ever forget 50-50-50. You have a 50% chance of swimming 50 feet in 50 degree water. Thats the real facts. Be safe.

"we're gonna need a bigger boat"

Let me relay a story Pat's sis told us.

While we were out cruising on Lake Travis she pointed out a nude part of a beach.

The local party boat was out one day with a load of, shall we say men who like men.

When the tour guy pointed out the nude beach and men sunbathing, they all ran to the one side and flipped the boat.

Just watch how your direct the tour.

So the Mothers Day trip will be made in two trips. I cannot push the envelope on this one.

Thanks for putting me on track.
