Only saw a couple of threads from 10 yrs ago, so I thought I'd check in on any opinions on current units etc.

Back when I owned TowBoat US we had early model Flir units that worked reasonably well.
Especially when we had to extract a vessel from a reef or the surf at night.

My 20-year-old daughter who worked summers as a licensed capt. While on break from college told me (tongue in cheek) that she could watch people having sex in their cabins at night.

I put the base model on Alchemy a couple years ago. It is very, very helpful at night and low vis situations. I can confirm you can see through a hull and register heat signatures in the right conditions, and that implants give off a different heat signature...

Ricky,
I saw a unit on Brewsters boat up in Montauk in 07 and it was clear. Great for MOB.

As part of my Raymarine Axiom Pro system, I have a FLIR M232 camera. In my particular use case (lots of small islands, night, flotsam and jetsam) it is far more useful than radar.

Cheers!

We've had a FLIR on our '31 for three years, camera mounted just below radar for same image. Also used one on our FD rescue boat. With a split screen, keep radar overlay on chart plotter on once side, and FLIR image on the other - incredible detail. ImageStarboard quarter Essex 090218
