OK guys...Just got back from seeing my engines Dynoed...Pretty must all good news...They didn't blow up...I have to admit, having always had Diesels in my boats, I really don't know much about the individual pieces of the puzzle that allow different components of a higher performance engine to function correctly...As an example, I can probably get another 50 HP if wanted from using a Holley 800 double pumper Carb, but I would need a high performance intake manifold to accomplish this...That being said, this is what has been accomplished with an Edelbrock and the factory Intake manifolds: The Torque curve is consistently 500-525lbs throughout the entire 3000-4000 RPM range...The HP is as follows:
3000 300/525
3100 307/525
3200 317/524
3300 325/525
3400 335/525
3500 345/521
3600 354/520
3700 363/520
3800 370/515
3900 373/505
4000 368/487
Only question now is what the fuel scans will read at cruise!!!!

excellent torque curve due to 496" being a "stroker" back off to 3000rpm for fuel economy -----it is all about Torque !!!!! in a 13,000 pound boat,hp is for race boats with a small amount of hull left in the water.

I'm hoping you are (And probably are!) correct Bob as I would love to run 3000-3200 and not have the secondaries sucking enormous amounts of fuel...

What about the 383 Mag Stroker motor that Mercury is putting out?
Very close hp ratings.
I know, not as torquey, but dimensionally an easy fit, and 200lbs lighter....
Would love to hear thoughts on this from the board.
Thanks,
John

i wish you would have ask me as to camshafts when you built this 496" Hopefully you went with a marine roller cam. you never have to worry about ZINC additives in the oil.and increase low end torque. with fuel injection you can equal diesel fuel economy . you will easely exceed a 4 cyl. yanmar in performance at low fuel economy rpm.remember start up run fifty hours and dump oil. remove oil filter cut in half take photo`s i want to see residue than fill with vavoline with either zinc additive or VR-1 raceing oil 10w-30.
An 383 is good but lacks the torque UNLESS you go with 6 liter LS small block. same SAE # 3 for you gears but you will need a small computer mounted in engine compartment now you have sensors and fuel injection.the best of both worlds.

tony there are many knock offs that can be used in car, truck installation but the " bomb-proof" oil relocation kit i illustrated is a Cummins unit with bullet proof oil hose fittings, Can you imagine if a oil hose let go while underway! Cummins only makes one for 6BTA/6CTA.
