Engine sound insulation

Hi,
What are the best materials to use for engine bay sound insulation? Do you guys use the lead layer foam type for the lids, or is it too heavy?

Does the egg box type foam do anything worthwhile?

Grateful for any advice.

David,

I have the foam/led/foam layers under the top of the boxes. At some places it’s hanging, but, after who knows how many years. From p-po...
Point is, there are SO many other places I have removed insulation to pass cables, tubes etc, that whether there is led insulation on top or not, it really doesnt matter...
Anyway, I believe that insulation is only necessary if someone intends to be spending time in the cabin, while en route, nobody does that on my boat.
Also, up on the bridge its super quiet, sometimes I hang over to listen to the engines if they sound ok.

If you are running diesels the sound down is a must. There are others on the market but they are about the best for boats.

When I had the big block gas engines, you could live with the sound but I get complaints with the diesels, especially when the Turbo kicks in. I was going to install it this past summer but did not get to it. It will be installed this spring. Tired of the wife complaining.

Thanks guys. The Yanmars are LOUD. Too loud to live with long term, so I’ll get it done this Winter.

Not sure I can find Soundown over this side. I will need to find similar.

Merry Christmas to all.
David.

Be right over. In fact I will bring Carl with me so I can buy him a beer and some cheese just before we install the SoundDown.

I used the foam/vinyl sound down. Not as heavy as the lead stuff, and not quite as effective, but it makes a big difference. Install on a B31 engine box is pretty easy. The sound down guys I’ve dealt with are great
