ZF-IRM 220A is the best gears behind a cummins 6bta and 1.53 is the correct ratio for a 31' Bertram.the ZF gears weight 65 pounds and can be handled by one man in a tight engine compartment like the 31 in addition to real strong flat area to serve as rear motor mounts for engine and transmission mounting to boat stringers.trolling valves are easily added to ZF-gears.

Bob

Isn't tight for a trolling valve?

Unless you are looking to chase those Triple outboard CC's you will be more than happy with the 270's. Figure at 2000 RPMs she is at about 20 knots. 2400 you are pushing between 24 and 25 knots depending on how heavy the boat is.

These engines will run at 2400 all day long and they are rated to 2600. I top out with this set up at 2650 and I am just shy of 30 knots.

Off shore, how many days can you really run at 25 knots (Bob and Jimmy not included in this discussion, their boats are more than well tuned). Fresh water cooled after cooler reducing maintenance.

Life is never easy! insurance paid owner on hull damage then owner just let it sit there due to marital problems. yard bill is $23,000 so yard will go ahead with mechanics lien .i imagine they will hold a "Kangaroo court" on boat site and dispose of boat to high bidder.will keep you informed.
