pulled the boat early to start my diesel project should be out and cleaned up this weekend

transmission options
my twin disc 502 rebuilt 3200 each
new zf220a with everything 4287 each or rto used set for 5k
was also looking at the zf63a 8 degree down angle new ones would be around 2300 each
what do you think my best bet is??

Don't know if it helps but, I have the 220's behind my 270 Cummins.

While you are in there, beef up the strut pad area and put in Fiberglass shaft logs.

IMHO, at this time, you should, at least, consider drip less shaft seals...

Man I can feel that itchy fiberglass dust from here. What did you take out EFI 454s?

Navatech, Looks like dripless to me, shaft log is just as crooked as mine were, but looks like the same PSS I have now.

Nope... Look very good at the 1st picture in the "grind grind grind" post... Those do NOT like drip less seals to me... In fact, they look like standard shaft seals to me...

yup marine power 454 multi port motors
they are standard shaft seals not sure im going to have the coin to go dripless just yet

Looks great! And I am right there with you. The memories!!!!

Pros and cons to drip less shaft seals. If anything goes wrong with them when you are offshore, it is going to be a real long ride home. At least with packing, and if you use gortex, you can jury rig something to get home safely.

I kept the conventional seals. When we re-powered the Diesel Dealer said, Keep it Simple.

Do two thinkgs, make sure you build outboard shelves to set Batteries, generator, holding tank etc on.

Also, the two in board stringers, the ones in the companion way, should be cut low enough so you can reach under the engines.

Is that pvc board? Tony is right about the shelves nows the time to do it, no engines in the way. You look like you are busy at it. Keep up the hard work your here those things purr soon.

im making a small shelf for autopilot on starboard side
was actually going to make one that has bins for storage of oil filters ect
the inboard stringers are stock height with mahogany to sister to them im going to build ramps to go to engine mounts
waiting on my gears and the boat to go inside to set up gantry crane and mock all that up
none of that is happening today as im ditching work and going to find some stripers take advantage of this nice weather

I presume you're talking about the autopilot's pump... I put mine under the console on the flybridge... According to Pascal's Law it doesn't matter where you put the pump but I'd rather have it as dry as possible...

all the steering components are starting to age so they are on the list of upgrades but not yet
when I redo the steering ill definitely put it under the helm that's a good idea

A warm place to work for the winter. Will you have her in by May or are you shooting for an earlier date? You are at the point of rebuilding the whole back end even if that is not your plan. You will be going, might as well fix that or this while I am here.

Here is what I did when I did my engines worked great closed it in under the boat and put a torpedo heater in there with a thermo stat set it for about 95 degrees and had radiant heat. Epoxy and paint dried in a flash and no smell or fumes from the heater.

i like that idea 34hatt very smart.never could figure out a way to cover bottom in boatyard situation because inside storage in maint. building is a no,no with a nice paint job.they spray in there all the time and one way or another you will get overspray. with power available you can use one of those inexpensive oil filled radiator heaters with no flame or odor inside canvas . maintains about 65 degree all winter in cabin and if i work in covered cockpit area i add another heater.

Got some work done this weekend set up the gantry and got 1 motor yo the shop for some mock up
All the mounts I made seem to be good but I would like to move the motor farther forward for more clearance
Shafts are not in my budget right now
Has anyone used a bobbin coupling they make them in 4 5 and 6 inch lengths

You should be still good with those engines and 13/8 shaft. Don't move the engines too far forward. You need to be able to get at the belts etc. Also, she seems to prefer to have a little more weight towards the stern.

I am sure you know this already, but be careful with those gantry cranes. We had one in the shop whose nickname was Flipper and it wasn't for the dolphin! They do not like side loading or sudden stops at all...

Be careful it all happens quickly and with heavy things!
