Anyone know where to get a socket that will fit the nut on a Penn reel? Got to shaped like this:

Need a socket, only. Any size drive.

please explain is that one stripped

I found that on a couple of fishing sites that one guy did use the gator socket with success on a stuck penn nut.

Just looked out in the shop and out of all the strange specialty sockets I got, none looked like it would work except one I made pretty easy.

Since its an 8 point a 4 point prong socket would work like a spanner nut socket.

Caliper the OD of the nut and find a 1/4 or 3/8 the same or very close to the same. Then mark off 4 prongs opposite of each other and dremel the rest away. Trim the prongs to the rounded shape and size of the penn nut valleys.

Or another way would be to use like a 3/4 or one inch bolt. Cut the threads off and file one side flat. Get some hardened pins the size of the valleys in the penn nut. Drill out the bolt head in the dimensions to fit the pins in the head to grab the penn nut. Turn the bolt head with a socket.



SK makes 2 prong spanner sockets.

Consider this.......take one of those wrenches.....cut off the section that fits the bolt......have someone either TIG weld it to a Socket or Silver Braze it to a socket.....that is slightly larger than the opening of the wrench.......your choice of drive size.

What model is the Penn reel that your having trouble with? I have a bunch of spare Penn reels in the garage.

Nothing broken. This is simply how I've always put line on my reels. Pole butt goes in the vise, socket goes on a 600 rpm 1/2" drill, spool goes on a stick, gloved hand guides the line back and forth. I just don't have access to the custom made socket any more. I'll probably weld one up using one of those wrenches.

Mike, this machinest makes a nice heavy custom wrench for Penn reels. Maybe you could find this guy through the link below and ask him to make a socket.

Gimme a bit of time, and maybe a couple dimensions like how long you want the wrench etc. and I might be able to have the guys downstairs cut one out of some nice hard tool steel with our wire edm.

Those guys can make anything. We have some really talented and amazing toolmakers...
