Is there a practical way to find a short in the DC wiring? Is there a meter available for detecting shorts? I remember back in the 70's the phone co. used a meter to detect shorts by giving off a series of clicks. Any help would be appreciated.

With no power on, you can use a tone generator(like what the phone company used) and a probe to find the short. You put the tone generator on one end of a known shorted line and then probe the other ends of circuit to find tone and identify the circuit.
