went under the boat today

Post by Kevin »

It has been in the water since late october and to my surprise there was almost no growth. A few barnacles on the rudders and on the trim tabs. Hardly even a scum line.
What I did notice was the bottom paint that is on the transom with in three inches of the trim tabs is all peeled off. Brushed it and found what appeared to be some virgin gelcoat. Problem area is only where the trim tab meets the hull and about three inches all the way around. Is this because of the two different paints?
The donut zincs on the shafts had chunks missing. Is that normal for about 4-5 months wet time? I am guessing not.

The zince are normal, they are made to die.......instead of somening else. Do you have zincs on the tabs? Sounds like maybe the galvanic currents around the tabs are eating the copper in the bottom paint.

Yup, they are 4 or 5 inch pancake zincs, top and bottom. there is some minor decay but still plenty of life left in them.
