Standard Horizon GPS Fix

Post by White Bear »

Relative to my ancient Standard Horizon CP150C: When it was turned on for the 2014 season, unit would not progress beyond the "acquiring" stage. It would display the proper time of day, but seemed stuck on a July, 2013 date. Logic dictated that 15 years of use had finally taken its toll and that it was time for a new GPS.

Experimenting, I found an internal test program installed on the machine that is accessed by holding down any control key while turning on the unit. After some trial and error I went on to the RAM test which looked OK, but unit still would not work. Having nothing to lose, I returned to the RAM test screen and erased the RAM which returned everything to default or "as delivered" setting. Even though this somewhat drastic action erased years of waypoints and routes (admittedly some of which had not been used for years), it did restore the unit to 100% functionality. From there it was a simple matter to reprogram my preferred modes of data display and we were ready for another year.

I know the 150C is an old unit and that this post may not have wide application for those who must have the "latest," but my unit has served all my needs, is securely mounted in a NavPod in a very exposed location that would be expensive and a pain to change, and I just like to make things function as they should.

If you have an old Standard Horizon that is acting up and you are at your wit's end, try erasing the RAM - you can always send it for repair or buy a new unit at a later date.

They make a real nice user friendly unit...but service keeps me from ever buying another one of their toys. Sent mine back 3 times in two years to fix a software glitch that had chart reloading a few miles from my location when i Zoomed. Each return was a few months turnaround, finally when they fixed...unit fogged up and they refused to repair under warrantee.

Glad a factory reset worked for you...
