Some have fed the packless seals from both engines so if one engine quits, that dead engine's seal will get fed with water from the running engine.
On 31's this is not normaly a problem as no part of the exhaust system is higher than the water over board into the exhaust connection.
But some large boats use lift mufflers and the outlet is higher than the exhaust outlet.
What can happen is the water feeds back into the dead engine, fills up the lift muffler and then backs up into the engine hydro locking it.
If you do it this way, put a ball valve at each engine feed so you can shut off if the engine dies to prevent backflow.
