Thanks Frank; I agree that they are very worthy of reading. I read "Speck in the Sea" before you posted it and wondered why the fisherman made so many blatantly dangerous decisions. The second article made a lot of sense raising the question of why anyone would take so many risks on the high seas. I worked on a shrimp trawler one summer doing night trawls and it is dangerous enough out there when you take all the right precautions.

Yes, the sea is inherently dangerous. However, with proper seamanship (e.g. watch keeping) the dangers will be mitigated to a large degree. Furthermore, with PLB's costing now less then $500.00 and with some as low as as $300.00-$350.00 there's no reason why every seagoing person shouldn't get one.
