Re: cockpit panels
I retract my statement on archiectural options... When I first started using Versatex it was only available as panels. I see now that they've expanded to include pretty much anything that Azek offers... http://www.versatex.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: cockpit panels
Been following this thread since this a project I want to tackle this off season. Have received several recommendations for this product.
Starlite XL.
Local supplier is Palco Plastics in Whitman, MA.
Would love to hear your thoughts compared to the threads aforementioned recommendations. Needs to be full length for side panels. Easily cut for hatches. Paintable. Smooth.
Go Sox.

Re: cockpit panels
Stu,
The product is "made from select high-grade King StarBoard® recycled high-density polyethylene", and as such, I don't think it'll be paintable. It will be heavier than PVC Foam Board, which is, for sure, paintable. I also suspect that the cost will be higher than PVC FB.
National Lumber shows a number of store locations in your area for Azek...

Re: cockpit panels
Patrick, thanks for the heads up regarding the painting issue. I'll check with National and Azek since there is, indeed, one in Newton, MA. Not far.
I'm Hattaras White topsides and want this to blend in as much as possible. Winter is projected to last until July here in NE so what's the rush!
God help me.

Re: cockpit panels
A second reply to several responses.
The Versatex at 5/8 is thicker than what I currently have. Not a deal breaker if the price is good. But also limited by the 4' sheet height. A higher 5' high piece could be ripped to length meaning one sheet is all I need to cover both sides.
The Arborite (according to the spec sheet) does come in 5' wide sheets and at .039 thickness seems closer in thickness to what I now have and need to replace. Provided it can be painted?
Am I understanding the spec sheets properly?
Thanks for your continued help.

Re: cockpit panels
Stuart,
Not sure I follow you... Arborite is a high pressure laminate, (similar to Formica but thinner), and .039" thickness is only a little over 1/32".

Patrick

Re: cockpit panels
My Bad, Capt. I was referring to my scribbled notes when posting so I confused Arborite with my Masonite. Not only did I get the product wrong, I got the thickness wrong as well.
Biggest issue is finding a product with a 5' wide sheet so I can cover both sides with one sheet. And, of couse, paint it.
I think your Azek suggestion is going to be the solution.
Thanks for getting back. My proofreading is not so good at this hour.

Re: cockpit panels
The best thing with the arbor rite is you can get in a ton of colors. Maybe the 33's are different, but this was the most applicable replacement for what was originally on the boat.

Any update as to your panels project, or do you just have the material in hand now ready and waiting to install?

Re: cockpit panels
Preston ... Not sure if you were referring to me "Steve (Bertramp)" ... the panels are in the hands of the carpenter that did my deck supports and new forward deck.Preston Burrows wrote:Paul:

Steering is being done this weekend (my NY mechanic is living at my place in FL, so he's done a bunch of what needs doing)
Panels are after some re-wiring is finished.
It's a slow process from afar, especially when I'm in busy season (accountant) and 1000 miles away, but project is going nicely.
