Steering???

Post by JimmyG »

Ok I have all the cockpit floor supports in and rudder supports done and now i'm a little bewildered, my 1972 31 had a tie bar with a center tab welded to it where the ram was mounted, this 1980 looks like it was mounted to one of the tiller arms….my questions are whats the preferred way to mount the ram, tie rod and tillers and does anyone have any pictures? Unfortunately the wood structures that supported the steering was rotted and gone.

Jimmy-
On mine the starboard tiller has 2 holes - the one nearer the rudder post is where the tie bar links the two tillers together the outer or aft hole has the ram installed. The ram is mounted to the transom. I don't know if this is the preferred way and do note that Buddy Boy was done with the ram mounted on the tie bar...

I will look for pictures but my tillers are under the rudder tables so I'm not sure I will be able to offer much.
Good luck,

Jimmy-

The link is to Mike Dolan's boat LightningShack. I've kept it marked because he has a lot of pictures up and does really nice work. There are a few pictures that show what he did for steering. When I did my tank replacement/install on the Anna E., I pmed Mike and he explained his install. He was really helpful.

Thanks guys, the pictures depict the way I had my old Bert set up and probably will go that way but for the life of me I can't picture how this ram could have been mounted to work off the tiller arm

Jimmy, don't forget the post about the rudders being too far back and losing steering..I did the buddy boy steering set up and my rudders were far enough forward not to "lose" steerage...amen..BH

I used S/S U blots to connect my ram rudder plate so it was adjustable worked great.

Dose it make a difference if the ram is connected to the tiller opposite of the picture ( ram to inner and tie rod to the outer ball)?

Jimmy,
My ram is attached to the tie rod and stringer. Don't think it matters that much. Still going with QSM 370??

Thanks again everyone, Capt Frank I'm going with QSB 380 or 355,330,305 (all one in the same) we will "detune" the 380's if its required

If you need to see a steering ram hooked up, if you are over at John's in the next couple of weeks I am still on the hard about 10 minutes away over at Ricks Marina. Tell John to take you over so you can look to see how it sets up.
