good morning all.
does any one pressure test their aftercooler after the maintenance of the core has been completed? if so, what psi do you pressurize it to?
i lay awake at night worried i installed the wrong o-ring and will hydro lock my 6bta 5.9 diesel.

I did pressure test my Cummins Aftercoolers at the time of reassembly.
The O'ring sealing areas were in good shape and I was not so worried about getting a good seal there but I wanted to know for sure that the Core itself did not have Pin Holes.
I tested mine at 40 PSI. I don't think it matters which side you pressurize.
Not a bad idea......a leak will not be good......and is always a concern.

Just an FYI for those who have Cummins 6B engines. I picked this up a couple of years ago on the boatdiesel forum...
As I understand it, Cummins over the years used 3 different O ring configurations to seal the aftercooler to the block. One guy was trying to sue his local Cummins shop after he went there to buy new seals, and the counter guy looked up the current part number and gave him the wrong configuration.. when he needed a previous version.. he hydro locked his engine and did megabucks of damage.
Be sure your new seals look exactly like the ones you removed before you leave the parts department!

after i got my "hoopdee" rig to quit leaking, i still had a small fall in pressure. sooo, i removed the cooler from the engine, jacked the pressure up to 60 psi and submerged the cooler in my pool (the testing ground for all things related...tires, basketballs, etc).
the bottom zinc had some bubbles flowing from it, but everything else was good.
i think i'm good to go, and can now let my mind annoy me with other future restoration issues.

That's good news Eric
The reward of "Peace of Mind" far outweighs the effort it took to "Pressure Test".
I like the pool idea.....I use 5 gallon buckets......
