B31 weight

Post by Russ Pagels »

I'm at Holtzs Marina in NJ putting new boat in the water.TomOaks tells me that the weight of the new(1972) boat is 16000 lbs.that's 4000 more than my last one.the new one has cummons 6btas and a gen set and a hard top and full fuel.does this weight sound right or are the Gage's on the travel lift off.the reason I ask is that my lift is rated for 16000.by the way if you ever get a chance to meet Tom Oaks he is a great guy. Thanks Russ

My 1962 Express 31 with 440's and 162gal tank(topped off) came in at 14,000lbs on the travel lift.
At the time she just had a canvas top and a half full fridge.

Add some diesel iron and a gen set, and a hard top, and more then 162gal of fuel, and some water, and holding tank juices...I could see scales tipping 16,000lb

Russ,
Sim is right on on the weight, my 1961 express with 454's, 162 gallon tank full, 25 gallons water, 6 gallon waste, fighting chair/rocket launcher, 21' Rupp outriggers ,12 rods, 2 anchors/rodes, 2 spare props, 3-3 tray built-in tackle boxes full of stuff, spare parts, weighed 15,500 pounds There is a 10% fudge factor on the rating of most lifts, I wouldn't worry about the weight just enjoy the boat, should be a nice solid ride.

My 1973 fbc weights in at 14,000lbs. With 50 gal. Of fuel . Purposely altered weight, places the new center of balance about 14" forward of rear of engine hatch. When considering total power package with ZF gears at 60 lbs on 250 hp cummins versus B/W cast iron with steel sae adapter on 440 gasser. The difference between diesel and gas is less then two hundred pounds.

Wow I guess the travel lift that lifts me has a broken scale. w/3208NA, hardtop, 200 gal fuel, and everything else 13000. I figured it should be more.

Russel if it makes you feel better a buddy who installs lifts told me they are only rated at 75-80% of what they can lift.
