Chris craft dory re power

I recently acquired a 1965 wooden CC dory. I am putting a new plywood/f/g bottom and new fuel tank on it and am considering a repower(currently an old Chrysler 318). I have seen other members on this board who have this boat. Any suggestions on re-power to a more modern engine? Mike

How big is the dory and how do you intend to use it?

CC dory is a 22 lapstrake boat with inboard power. It will be used in the Chesapeake Bay and in Southern New Jersey on the ocean.

Yes. the 22 ft hull was made in 2 versions a center console called the dory and a small cabin version called the cutlass.

My neighbor who is a diesel mechanic has one. He repower a couple of years and just went with another 318. He did install cdi ignition.
Another neighbor has a 22 cutlass with a 4.390tdi 200hp Nanni Diesel.

Would be nice, but not cheap (not that any of them are). Bill Smith (Tunawish?) on Shelter Island has a Cutlass he was talking on the site a while back about restoring. Maybe he'll chime in.

if you have the coin for diesel that is great, if you want to stay chrysler I actually have a 413 that was never in a boat, I rebuilt it for my Century but honestly I cant see myself ever bothering with the boat.

it is tough to beat those chryslers

Hey Charlie,

How does your neighbor's boat perform with the 200 HP diesel? Years ago I had a 22' Cutlass with a 327 CI Chevy (about 225HP), and it performed really well, ran about 22 or 23 knots at something over 1.5 NMPG. I'd imagine that it has to a 2+ if not 3 MPG boat, and may well run in the 22-24 knot range.

I have been kicking around the idea of finding a fixer-upper dory and starting again. Was wondering if a diesel would work in that boat, or if the gearing would be a problem given the drivetrain (stock 1 1/8" shaft would have to go for sure). Think the 4cyl Yanmars would be ideal given the light weight and high RPM design, would lead to a gas motor-like drive train.

From what I understand the guy loves the set-up. The nanni diesels are toyoto's; but without the special (high cost) yanmar stuff. I know another guy who put tow of them in a 31B and then ran the boat to Panama or Costa Rico, oh someplace in Central America on it's own bottom.

How are you doing the glass over wood? Seaflex, epoxy? Where is the boat? I know a yard that has glassed countless wood dead-rises near Solomons, MD if you need assistance. Not sure if the boat is on the Chesapeake now...

The boat is at Mast and Mallet boats in Edgewater. The bottom is being done with epoxy/fiberglass. I will probably just keep the chrysler engine due to the cost of a diesel (18-20 K according to the local steyr dealer). Mike

That model came from the factory with a 327, 210 hp motor. But if the 318 runs it well, they are great motors too. Just change the oil every fifty hours.
My CC Cutlass Dory is the rare 1978 Cuddy Cabin model. Great boat!

Just bought a 78 Center Console model too with a 350 c in Crusader. Runs like a champ. Have it out not to do some cosmetics and also new mufflers. Great boats, both of them.
