My names is Allen Shevey and I have just recently joined your sight. I am trying to buy a 31 sportfisher from a friend of mine but neither one of us really know what the boat is worth. The boat has been out of the water for 4 years and has been neglected. It has 350 engines in it that were running when pulled out of the water, but who knows now. The interior and flybridge is all there but could use a great deal of attention(money).The hull seems to be sound. My take on the boat is that it would need to be completely redone. If the motors ended up being alright that would just be a bonus to the project, but I am not counting on it. If anyone out there could give me some guidance I would certainly appreciate it. I have been a big fan of the 31 for a long time and hope that soon I can join the ranks of other 31 owners.

without pic's I can tell you it's worth more to him , than it is to you.
motors/tanks are a issue to the tune of 5kish for decks/tanks(you doing most of the work) motors , pick your posion. Dougs take outs 4k full yanni repower 60k. electronics 5 to 20k. interior might be yuor cheepest 2-10k again depending on what you want. Paint or polishing the snot out of the gel coat 2k-15k.
So bottom line 25- 30k for a soso refit to100+k all day. market is a bit soft , so unless you can do or have done Jimmy gato/Captain Pat/who ever did JK's boat(and whoever else I've missed) type work, the resale on a ok refinished gasser is probably 50-80k diesel might be 20k more. I'd venture your buddies boat is in the 25-35 range. And that might be high. You really need a survey.

Welcome to our sandbox....
My thoughts are that if you are willing to and capable of doing most of the work your self offer 15K and negotiate from there
If you are not willing to spend all of your spare time, and then some, for the next 2+ years or do not have the resources to restore this boat yourself be prepared to dig really deep into your pockets to have it restored professionally.
I followed the restoration of a 31 FBC that was done professionally from the keel up, money was no object, and the final bill exceeded $250K but it one fine ride when finished.

Dan shouldn't be able to go over budget, as I've carried 200k for the number..........of course I've only been able to fund 30k of it.

CMP, left a message for Dave. If we go down the one path it will be close to20- 30K with the paint and other thing were debating. If it's down the other path a bit more, and if I get the IPS and volvo power your trying to talk me out of, well I won't be able to buy that new set of Hanks rods.....

Allen, if you want a bertram 31 get one. Not because it makes sence $$ wise. Its all about making it yours, not how fixxed up it is or fancy but the time you spend on it and the good feeling of friends and family and time shared. If you just wanted a boat you could make the mistake of buying a Hatt or Bayliner. You want to be driving THE BEST BOAT EVER BUILT and whats cooler than that? It took 12 years to get mine right for me. Its the journey not a place. Good luck The 31 is the way to go in the end.

12 years because I did all the work by my self. Every wire, every hose, everything. It may not be perfect but at least I did it. Anyone can buy a boat and have someone make it nice for them, but for me, I wanted done by me. Not everyone has the time to do it. And boating is differant for everyone. Some want it all done so they can go have fun and thats cool too. It might take more than 12 years to finish the Tubbbbb with the amount of time you spend on Bertram31.com giving a hard time to the owners of 'THE BEST BOAT EVER BUILT'. Your bud Brewster.

Second I found a couple of stripped Hunydi's up here with "good" motors. You want that I pick em up for your next project????????
come on Brewster, your not a sheep, following UV's pan pipes , best boat ever built malarky. Second best, after the tubbb I'd give you, if I drank enough of the proff's good scotch. If you check with him , I'm sure he'll confrim that I work on tight budgets. Once, he dropped a titanium bolt off his ducatti in the garage where we pitted during race weekends(he and I used to roadrace motorcycles). At that time I was riding clapped out jap stuff. 2 weeks later I'd scrounged enough stuff to go wtih the fancy bolt that I was able to campagin a clapped out frankenstien ducatti based thing, and placed well on it. Best part of the bike was the bolt mike later told me he had thrown away, as it out lived it's work life.
And yes I enjoy giving members of the "faithfull" a hard time, heck I like giving everyone a hard time. Defencive personality quirk I developed being a military brat, moving every few years whether I needed it or not. Feel free to check with kathi, I'm a equal oppertunity abuser
BTW, my fiberglass enginer works for beer, and not much of it, as I can't afford the stuff he likes.

Since it does not look like any is answering since they are all picking on Timmy, I will try and get you started.
Uncle Vic is the hull number expert, but depending on the year it was built, and I believe it was 73 in which they started to put them on the starboard corner of the transom. Before that, it seems they would write the number on various hull parts and some times the numbers don't match up, depending which pile the part came from. Some guys have found them written on the inside of the hull up in the V berth others somewhere in the transom area.
If you go to the old website www.bertram31.com and do a search you will find Uncle Vics instructions for deteriming the year built and the model, ie flybridge cruiser, sport fish etc.

If you are serious about buying a "Project boat" look at a post by Whaler1777 entitled "Its Back". On that post there is a link to a Bertram 31 Express Cruiser that can be purchased right now for $9800.00. The "Express" is a rare model of the 31's.
The one listed on Ebay needs everything.......I got the feeling that the one you are looking at needs everything also........This one can be purchased for less than half of the estimated value that most of the faithful were quoting.
Once again..........where in the hell was deals like this when I was 20 years younger and a lot smarter than I am now.
